Guwahati/Nagpur: Karnataka strengthened their position against Assam with a commanding first-innings lead of 361 runs, while Vidarbha moved into a strong position against Madhya Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy Elite competition on Tuesday, 3 November.

Karnataka’s batting effort was led by an unbeaten 142 from KV Aneesh, who helped the visitors reach 496 for five after Assam had been dismissed for 135. At the end of the second day’s play, Karnataka had built a substantial advantage, with five wickets still in hand.

In Nagpur, Vidarbha recovered from a difficult start to post 334 for nine against Madhya Pradesh. Captain Akshay Wadkar scored a century, while Nachiket Bhute contributed 97. Their partnership helped Vidarbha secure a first-innings lead of 125 runs. Madhya Pradesh ended the day at 19 for one in their second innings, still trailing by 106 runs.

KV Aneesh leads Karnataka’s batting charge

Karnataka produced a dominant batting performance after bowling Assam out for 135 in their first innings at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati.

The visitors began their reply aggressively, with Rohan Patil and Mayank Agarwal providing a strong opening partnership. Patil scored 89 off 87 balls, striking 13 boundaries and a six, while Agarwal contributed 72 from 121 deliveries, including 10 fours.

Their partnership gave Karnataka an excellent platform before the middle order consolidated the advantage.

KV Aneesh then took charge of the innings, producing an unbeaten 142 from 242 balls. His knock included 10 fours and two sixes. He remained at the crease as Karnataka crossed the 400-run mark and continued to build the lead.

Aneesh received valuable support from Aneeshwar Gautam, who scored 83 from 131 balls. Gautam struck nine boundaries and three sixes before being dismissed. Their contribution ensured that Karnataka maintained control even after losing wickets during the innings.

Manvanth Kumar also made an important contribution, remaining unbeaten on 53 from 63 deliveries. His innings included five fours and two sixes, helping Karnataka extend their total to 496 for five at stumps on Day Two.

Assam struggle after being bowled out for 135

Assam had a difficult time against Karnataka’s bowling attack, managing only 135 runs in 48.1 overs in their first innings.

Rithesh Bhatkal and Shikhar Shetty were particularly effective, taking five wickets each. Bhatkal returned figures of five for 35 from 18 overs, while Shetty claimed five for 51.

Sibsankar Roy was among Assam’s more notable contributors, scoring 39. Denish Das made 26, but the home side could not build the substantial partnerships needed to post a competitive total.

The collapse left Assam facing a considerable deficit even before Karnataka’s batters had completed their first innings.

At stumps on the second day, Karnataka were 496 for five, holding a first-innings lead of 361 runs. Aneesh and Manvanth Kumar were unbeaten, giving the visitors an opportunity to add further runs when play resumes.

Wadkar and Bhute rescue Vidarbha against Madhya Pradesh

In Nagpur, Vidarbha captain Akshay Wadkar and Nachiket Bhute produced a crucial recovery after Madhya Pradesh had put pressure on the hosts early in their first innings.

Vidarbha resumed the second day’s play at 56 for four and slipped further to 87 for six. Madhya Pradesh had made an encouraging start with their bowling, but Wadkar and Bhute changed the course of the innings through a substantial seventh-wicket partnership.

Wadkar played the anchor role, scoring 100 from 212 balls with nine boundaries before retiring hurt. Bhute provided the attacking impetus, making 97 from 111 deliveries, including six fours and five sixes.

The pair added 175 runs for the seventh wicket, taking Vidarbha out of trouble and putting the team in a position to secure a first-innings advantage.

Vidarbha eventually posted 334 for nine in 93 overs, gaining a lead of 125 runs over Madhya Pradesh, who had scored 209 in their first innings.

Madhya Pradesh lose an early wicket again

Madhya Pradesh’s second innings began with another setback as Yash Dubey was dismissed for four. Parth Rekhade took the wicket, leaving the visitors under pressure once more.

At stumps, Madhya Pradesh were 19 for one after six overs. Saksham Purohit was unbeaten on 14, while Atharva Mahajan was on one. The team remained 106 runs behind Vidarbha’s first-innings total.

The first innings had seen Madhya Pradesh’s Atharv Mahajan score 85, while Saransh Jain contributed 34. However, Harsh Dubey’s outstanding bowling performance restricted the visitors to 209.

Dubey finished with nine wickets for 53 runs, one of the standout individual performances of the match. His spell had given Vidarbha an opportunity to take control, although Madhya Pradesh’s bowlers initially appeared to have the upper hand when the hosts slipped to 87 for six.

Wadkar’s century and Bhute’s near-hundred change the contest

The partnership between Wadkar and Bhute was central to Vidarbha’s recovery. Wadkar’s patient innings provided stability, while Bhute’s attacking approach put pressure back on the Madhya Pradesh bowlers.

Saransh Jain was the leading wicket-taker for Madhya Pradesh in Vidarbha’s innings, claiming three for 77. Kumar Kartikeya also took three wickets, finishing with three for 106.

The recovery demonstrated the value of partnerships in first-class cricket, particularly after a team loses several wickets early in an innings. Vidarbha’s lower-order resistance turned a difficult position into a first-innings lead.

Karnataka and Vidarbha strengthen their positions

The two matches produced contrasting but important batting performances. Karnataka’s top and middle order built a large total against Assam, while Vidarbha relied on a crucial lower-order partnership to move ahead of Madhya Pradesh.

For Karnataka, Aneesh’s unbeaten 142 and the contributions from Patil, Agarwal, Gautam and Manvanth Kumar put the team in a commanding position. The bowling efforts of Bhatkal and Shetty had earlier restricted Assam to a modest total.

Vidarbha, meanwhile, will look to build on their 125-run first-innings lead and put further pressure on Madhya Pradesh in the remaining days.

Both matches are scheduled to continue until 5 November. The next day’s play will be important in determining whether Karnataka can convert their advantage into a decisive position and whether Vidarbha can maintain their control in Nagpur.
