Raipur: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) head coach Abhishek Nayar expressed concern over the absence of key spinner Varun Chakravarthy following the team’s defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), calling the situation “unfortunate” as the side missed its trusted spin combination.

KKR suffered a six-wicket loss while defending a competitive total of 192, with Virat Kohli’s unbeaten century powering RCB to the top of the IPL 2026 points table. However, Nayar highlighted that the absence of Varun, due to a niggle and recurring injury concerns, played a significant role in the outcome.

Varun-Narine combination sorely missed

Nayar underlined the importance of the spin duo of Varun Chakravarthy and Sunil Narine, which has been a key strength for KKR over the years. With Varun sidelined, the team lacked its usual control in the middle overs.

“It is unfortunate. We have missed him a lot this season. This is the second time he has had a fracture, and it is tough because you cannot easily replace a player like Varun,” Nayar said during the post-match press conference.

He added that the combination of Narine and Varun brings balance and variety, making it difficult for opposition batters to settle. Their absence together weakens KKR’s ability to control the game, especially during crucial middle overs.

Varun had been in impressive form leading into the match, taking 10 wickets in his last five games, making his absence even more significant.

Kohli capitalises on missed chances

Nayar admitted that fielding lapses, particularly dropping Virat Kohli early in his innings, proved costly for KKR. Kohli went on to score an unbeaten 105, anchoring RCB’s successful chase of 193.

“We all know that if you drop Virat Kohli, especially while chasing, it becomes very difficult. That moment could have changed the game,” Nayar said.

He acknowledged that while the team had put up a competitive total, failure to seize key opportunities allowed RCB to stay ahead in the contest. Devdutt Padikkal’s solid knock of 39 further supported Kohli in maintaining the required run rate.

Pitch conditions not a major factor

Addressing the conditions in Raipur, Nayar said that pre-match rain had only a minimal impact on the pitch. He felt that the surface remained good for batting and that KKR had posted a defendable score.

“Anytime there is rain, you expect some swing early on, which happened. But we still felt 180 to 200 was a good total on that wicket,” he explained.

KKR’s innings was anchored by a brilliant unbeaten 71 from Angkrish Raghuvanshi and a steady 49 not out from Rinku Singh, helping the team post 192/4 in 20 overs.

Backing Vaibhav Arora despite expensive spell

Nayar also defended pacer Vaibhav Arora, who conceded 48 runs in his four overs. Despite a tough outing, the coach backed the bowler’s experience and role within the team.

“In the last few matches, he made a very good comeback. He is the kind of defensive bowler you need in T20 cricket. We trusted him to bowl to Virat Kohli,” Nayar said.

Vaibhav has taken 11 wickets in 11 matches this season, stepping up as a key Indian pacer in the absence of Harshit Rana.

Raghuvanshi earns praise for composed innings

Among the positives, Nayar praised young batter Angkrish Raghuvanshi for his mature innings under challenging conditions. The youngster’s 71 not out came at a time when the ball was assisting pacers like Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood.

“I was very impressed with the way he batted. He was tactically smart, used the angles well and never looked uncomfortable,” Nayar noted.

Raghuvanshi has now scored 340 runs in 11 matches at an average of 34.00, emerging as a bright prospect for KKR this season.

Playoff hopes under pressure

The defeat has significantly dented KKR’s playoff chances, ending their four-match unbeaten run. With only three matches remaining, the team faces a must-win situation to stay in contention for the top four.

On the other hand, RCB have surged to the top of the table with 16 points from 12 matches, strengthening their bid for a playoff spot.

Conclusion

Abhishek Nayar’s remarks highlight how injuries and missed opportunities can impact a team’s campaign in a tightly contested tournament like the IPL. While KKR showed resilience with the bat, the absence of Varun Chakravarthy and costly fielding errors proved decisive. As the league stage nears its end, KKR must regroup quickly and deliver near-perfect performances to keep their playoff hopes alive.
