New Delhi: The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have released Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from their squad ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, following a directive from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The decision brings to an end days of speculation surrounding the left-arm pacer’s future with the franchise.

In an official statement issued on Saturday, KKR confirmed that the move was made in compliance with instructions from the BCCI, which functions as the governing body of the IPL. The franchise clarified that the release was carried out after due consultations and in line with league regulations.

“Kolkata Knight Riders confirms that BCCI/IPL, as the regulator of IPL, has instructed it to release Mustafizur Rahman from the squad ahead of the upcoming IPL season. The release has been carried out following due process and consultations, upon the instruction of the Board of Control of Cricket in India,” the statement said. KKR also noted that the BCCI has assured the franchise of a replacement option, with further details to be communicated later.

BCCI confirms instruction to franchise

The development was confirmed exclusively by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, who stated that the board had formally asked KKR to part ways with the Bangladesh international. Speaking to India Today, Saikia said the decision was taken in view of recent developments and was aimed at preventing further complications ahead of the tournament.

“Due to the recent developments that are going on all across, BCCI has instructed the franchise KKR to release one of their players, Mustafizur Rahman of Bangladesh, from their squad,” Saikia said. He added that the board has assured KKR that they will be allowed to sign a replacement player if required, in accordance with IPL rules.

While the BCCI did not spell out specific reasons in its official communication, Saikia’s remarks indicated that the board had taken into account the broader situation before intervening.

Signing turns controversial

Mustafizur Rahman was signed by KKR for Rs 9.20 crore at the IPL 2026 mini-auction held in December 2025. At the time, the acquisition was seen as a strong cricketing move, given the pacer’s reputation for his cutters, slower balls and proven effectiveness in T20 cricket across leagues worldwide.

However, the signing soon became controversial. Sections of the political spectrum and some religious groups raised objections to the inclusion of a Bangladeshi player in the KKR squad. The criticism intensified in the backdrop of the recent killing of a Hindu man in Bangladesh and India’s stated concerns over the safety of minorities in the neighbouring country.

The issue gained further traction after BJP leader Kaustav Bagchi publicly opposed the participation of Bangladeshi players in IPL matches held in Kolkata. His comments sparked wider debate, with criticism emerging from multiple quarters. Some voices even targeted KKR co-owner and Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan for backing the signing during the auction.

BCCI seeks to avoid escalation

Although the BCCI has not officially linked the decision to political pressure or public protests, sources indicate that the board was keen to avoid any situation that could disrupt the smooth conduct of IPL 2026. The instruction to release Mustafizur is understood to be a preventive step, taken as preparations for the season gather pace.

The BCCI has maintained that its primary focus remains on ensuring the tournament proceeds without controversy or external distractions. By stepping in early, the board appears to have aimed at drawing a line under the issue before it escalated further.

Impact on KKR’s squad balance

From a cricketing standpoint, Mustafizur’s release leaves KKR with a gap in their overseas fast-bowling options. The Bangladesh pacer was expected to be a key weapon, particularly on slower pitches where his variations and accuracy could have been decisive.

KKR management has not yet indicated who they might target as a replacement, but the assurance from the BCCI gives the franchise flexibility to restructure their squad. The availability of quality overseas fast bowlers and all-rounders in the market could influence their eventual choice.

Conclusion

The release of Mustafizur Rahman underscores the complex interplay between sport, administration and wider socio-political developments in high-profile tournaments like the IPL. While the decision may disappoint fans eager to see the Bangladesh pacer in KKR colours, it highlights the BCCI’s intent to prioritise stability and continuity ahead of IPL 2026. With a replacement likely to be announced in due course, KKR will now look to move forward and finalise their squad for the upcoming season.
