New Delhi: Delhi Capitals have confirmed that KL Rahul will open the innings in the Indian Premier League 2026 season, with captain Axar Patel stating the move is aimed at fixing the team’s long-standing top-order inconsistency.
The decision comes after a turbulent previous season where Delhi experimented with multiple opening combinations without finding stability.
Rahul returns to preferred role
Axar Patel revealed that Rahul had been used in the middle order last season due to team balance and overseas player combinations.
However, the management now believes the experienced batter is best suited to the opening slot, where he has historically delivered strong performances.
“He has always been good as an opener and has made a lot of runs there. A solid start makes things easier for the middle order,” Axar said.
Addressing last season’s instability
Delhi Capitals struggled with frequent changes at the top in IPL 2025, using as many as seven different opening pairs across the campaign.
Combinations involving players like Faf du Plessis, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Abishek Porel and Karun Nair failed to provide consistency.
The constant reshuffling disrupted the team’s rhythm, often putting pressure on the middle order to recover from poor starts.
Management backs continuity
Head coach Hemang Badani emphasised that strong opening partnerships have become increasingly crucial in T20 cricket over the past few years.
With that in mind, the team management has decided to stick with Rahul as a fixed opener for the upcoming season.
Improved white-ball form
Rahul’s recent form has been encouraging. In IPL 2025, he scored 539 runs at a strike rate of 150—his most aggressive season since 2022.
Over the past 18 months, he has worked on improving his power-hitting, making him a more dynamic option at the top of the order.
Opening partner yet to be finalised
While Rahul’s role is confirmed, Delhi are yet to decide on his opening partner. Options include Pathum Nissanka, Prithvi Shaw and Abishek Porel.
The final combination is expected to be influenced by form, match conditions, and team balance.
Big test against LSG
Delhi Capitals will begin their IPL 2026 campaign against Lucknow Super Giants, Rahul’s former team.
The match will offer an early indication of whether the decision to promote him to the top pays off.
Conclusion
By backing KL Rahul as a permanent opener, Delhi Capitals are aiming to bring stability and consistency to their batting lineup. If the move succeeds, it could significantly improve their chances in IPL 2026 after a mixed campaign last year.
