Indian cricket icons Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were left visibly amused after being part of an unusual felicitation ceremony during the first ODI between India and New Zealand at the BCA Stadium in Kotambi on Saturday.
During the mid-innings break, the two senior batters were invited onto the field and asked to step inside a small booth resembling a telephone box, with their photographs printed on the exterior. The light-hearted moment unfolded as Baroda Cricket Association president Pranav Amin opened the booth door, prompting Kohli and Rohit to step out and sign it as part of the ceremony.
Both players were seen laughing uncontrollably, clearly surprised by the novelty of the tribute. A video of the moment quickly went viral on social media, with fans calling it one of the most endearing clips featuring the celebrated duo.
A symbolic tribute at a new venue
While neither Kohli nor Rohit was marking a personal milestone match, the felicitation is understood to have been symbolic. The match marked the first-ever men’s ODI hosted at the Kotambi stadium and could potentially be the last appearance of the two veterans at the venue, making the gesture a commemorative one.
The moment added a touch of warmth and humour to the historic occasion, reflecting the enduring bond between the two cricketers and their ability to enjoy the lighter side of the game despite their stature.
Match situation
On the field, New Zealand put up a strong total of 300 for 8 after being sent in to bat. Devon Conway and Henry Nicholls laid a solid foundation before India fought back through disciplined bowling. Daryl Mitchell’s aggressive half-century ensured the visitors crossed the 300-run mark.
India were set a target of 301, setting the stage for an engaging chase to follow.
