New Delhi: Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar launched sharp criticism at KL Rahul following his slow innings during Delhi Capitals’ defeat to Chennai Super Kings at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on May 5.
Delhi Capitals suffered an eight-wicket loss, marking their fourth defeat in five home games this season. Batting first on a sluggish pitch, DC managed to post only 156 runs, which CSK chased comfortably.
“Signed the death warrant,” says Manjrekar
Taking to Instagram, Sanjay Manjrekar criticised Rahul’s approach in the powerplay, calling his innings detrimental to the team’s chances.
“It’s almost like odd and even games… Once you get out after getting to 12 off 12, you’ve signed the death warrant for your team,” he remarked, pointing to the lack of momentum in the early overs.
Manjrekar added that after a slow start in the first six overs, Delhi Capitals were effectively out of the contest.
Rahul struggles to accelerate
KL Rahul, who has shown improved intent this season, failed to get going in this match. He scored 12 runs off 13 balls before being dismissed following a tactical move by CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, who continued with spinner Akeal Hosein against the right-hander.
Manjrekar emphasised that in modern T20 cricket, openers are expected to maintain a high strike rate from the outset, especially when other teams’ top-order batters score at rates exceeding 200.
DC’s struggles continue
The defeat further dented Delhi Capitals’ playoff hopes. The team currently has eight points from 10 matches and faces a must-win situation in the remaining games.
Despite this setback, Rahul has been one of DC’s standout performers this season, scoring 445 runs in 10 matches at an average of 49.44 and an impressive strike rate of 180.89.
Upcoming fixtures crucial
Delhi Capitals will next take on Kolkata Knight Riders on May 8 at home, before travelling to Dharamshala to face Punjab Kings on May 11.
With the league stage nearing its end, the team will need consistent performances to stay in contention for the playoffs.
Conclusion
While KL Rahul has enjoyed a strong season overall, his slow innings against CSK has drawn criticism from experts like Sanjay Manjrekar. As the tournament enters a decisive phase, balancing consistency with aggressive intent will be key for both Rahul and Delhi Capitals.
