Melbourne: Australia head coach Andrew McDonald has expressed strong confidence in Cameron Green, saying the all-rounder has the ability to balance the immense expectations placed on him in both international cricket and the IPL.
Green, currently representing Kolkata Knight Riders, became the most expensive overseas signing in IPL history after being bought for a staggering ₹25.20 crore.
“Expectations are part of the role”
McDonald acknowledged that the pressure on all-rounders is naturally high, especially in a competitive environment like the IPL.
“There’s huge expectation within the IPL, and there’s huge expectation with any all-rounder that shapes an Australian team. It’s not unfair,” McDonald said.
He explained that all-rounders are often expected to deliver consistently with both bat and ball—an extremely demanding benchmark in modern cricket.
Balancing performance and workload
The coach emphasised that Green’s challenge lies in managing expectations while playing across formats.
“It’s almost like they want them to average 45 with the bat and under 30 with the ball. Very few achieve that. I’m sure his career will trend upwards,” McDonald added.
Green is currently recovering from a back issue, which has kept him away from bowling duties temporarily. Cricket Australia has already clarified that the franchise is aware of his condition and workload management plan.
Fitness concerns won’t define his future
Despite his injury history, McDonald made it clear that Green remains a strong contender to be an all-format player for Australia.
“I think he’s good enough. It’s only a matter of time before he consistently performs for Australia,” he said.
The coach also hinted at team combinations evolving, especially after changes in Australia’s Test setup, which could open more opportunities for versatile players like Green.
A key investment for KKR
With Ajinkya Rahane leading KKR, Green’s presence adds significant balance to the squad, even as he gradually returns to full fitness.
His ability to contribute with both bat and ball makes him a crucial asset, particularly in high-pressure IPL matches.
Conclusion
Andrew McDonald’s backing reinforces Cameron Green’s status as one of cricket’s most promising all-rounders. While expectations remain sky-high, careful workload management and consistent performances could see him emerge as a cornerstone for both Australia and Kolkata Knight Riders in the years ahead.
