New Delhi: Delhi Capitals have suffered a major setback ahead of the Indian Premier League 2026 season, with Australian pace spearhead Mitchell Starc ruled out of the opening phase due to workload management.
The development comes as part of Cricket Australia’s cautious approach to managing its fast bowlers amid a packed international calendar. Starc is the latest in a growing list of Australian players set to miss the early part of the tournament.
Workload management takes priority
Starc, who was signed by Delhi Capitals for ₹11.75 crore, has been a key figure in their bowling attack. However, his recent workload — including a full Ashes series and appearances in the latter stages of the Big Bash League — has prompted the Australian board to prioritise his long-term fitness.
Despite stepping away from T20 internationals last year, the 36-year-old remains central to Australia’s plans in Test and ODI formats. With a demanding schedule ahead, including potential tours of South Africa, India and England, along with preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup, the decision to rest him has been seen as a preventive measure.
Starc is expected to join the squad only after completing return-to-play protocols in the coming weeks.
Cummins and Hazlewood also unavailable
Starc is not the only Australian pacer set to miss the initial matches. Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood will also be unavailable during the early phase of the IPL under similar workload management guidelines.
Their participation will depend on how they progress through fitness and recovery protocols in the coming weeks, adding further uncertainty for franchises relying on Australian fast bowlers.
Australia selector Tony Dodemaide recently clarified that the situation is largely a matter of scheduling priorities rather than lack of commitment.
“If it was in reverse and the IPL came before the World Cup, they would miss the IPL to play for Australia,” he said, emphasising the players’ dedication to national duties.
More setbacks for IPL teams
In addition to workload-related absences, injuries have further depleted the pool of overseas fast bowlers.
Nathan Ellis has been ruled out of the tournament after suffering a hamstring injury. He was expected to play a leading role for Chennai Super Kings but will now miss the entire season.
Similarly, Jack Edwards, a promising seam-bowling all-rounder signed by Sunrisers Hyderabad for ₹3 crore, will also miss the IPL due to a foot injury.
These setbacks have forced franchises to reassess their strategies and look for suitable replacements ahead of the tournament.
Delhi Capitals face early challenge
For Delhi Capitals, Starc’s absence will be particularly significant. As an experienced left-arm pacer, he was expected to lead the bowling attack and provide breakthroughs in crucial phases of the game.
The franchise will now need to rely on backup options and domestic talent to fill the void in the early matches. Team management may also explore replacement signings if the absence extends further.
Conclusion: Uncertainty clouds IPL build-up
With multiple Australian pacers unavailable due to workload management and injuries, IPL 2026 faces an unusual build-up marked by uncertainty.
While the long-term fitness of players remains a priority for national boards, franchises must quickly adapt to these challenges. For Delhi Capitals and others, the ability to cope without key overseas stars in the opening phase could prove decisive in shaping their campaigns.
