Karachi: Former England all-rounder Moeen Ali has finally opened up on his decision to skip the Indian Premier League and instead play in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), citing workload, playing time, and family priorities.

The veteran cricketer, who featured for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL 2025, opted to represent Karachi Kings in PSL 2026 amid the scheduling clash between the two leagues.

Shorter tournament and family balance key factors

Speaking about his decision, Moeen said that the shorter duration of the PSL played a major role, allowing him to better manage both his career and personal life.

“There are a few reasons. I’m 38 now, and I still want to play, do well, and extend my career as much as possible. Karachi was a big factor in my decision to come here. It’s a shorter competition, which works better for my family and me,” he said.

Lack of opportunities in IPL influenced choice

Moeen also pointed to his limited role in the IPL last season as a significant factor. Despite being part of KKR, he featured in only a handful of matches and had minimal impact with the bat.

In IPL 2025, Moeen played six matches but got very few chances to contribute, batting only twice and scoring just five runs. The lack of consistent opportunities made it difficult for him to stay involved in the game.

“At this stage, I want to be out there; I want to bat. I feel like I’m playing good cricket towards the back end of my career, and I just want to keep going,” he explained.

Desire to experience PSL cricket

The England all-rounder also revealed that he had long been interested in playing in the PSL but had previously been unable to do so due to scheduling conflicts.

“You’re never guaranteed a place anywhere, even here, but I just want to enjoy my cricket as much as I can. I’ve always wanted to experience the PSL, but unfortunately, it slightly clashes with the IPL,” he added.

New chapter with Karachi Kings

Now representing Karachi Kings, Moeen is enjoying a fresh phase in his T20 career. The move not only gives him more game time but also allows him to explore a new cricketing environment.

Reports suggest that Moeen is earning around Rs 2.14 crore for his stint in the PSL, a deal that aligns well with his current priorities of balance and longevity.

Conclusion

Moeen Ali’s decision to choose the PSL over the IPL reflects a shift in priorities as he approaches the latter stages of his career. With a focus on playing time, shorter commitments, and family balance, the England all-rounder has opted for a path that keeps him actively involved on the field while maintaining personal well-being.
