Rabat: Host nation Morocco has been declared the winner of the Africa Cup of Nations after Confederation of African Football overturned Senegal’s victory and ruled that the final was forfeited.

CAF’s appeals board said Senegal is “declared to have forfeited the final,” converting its 1-0 extra-time win into a 3-0 default victory for Morocco.

Chaotic final leads to reversal

The controversial final, held on January 18 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, was marred by protests and disruptions.

Senegal players, led by coach Pape Thiaw, briefly walked off the pitch during stoppage time in protest against a penalty awarded to Morocco. The match was halted for around 15 minutes, while sections of the crowd attempted to enter the field.

Key moments of controversy

When play resumed, Morocco forward Brahim Diaz attempted a “Panenka” penalty, which was saved by Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

Senegal later scored the only goal in extra time to secure what was initially a 1-0 win.

Tensions had already escalated earlier when a Senegal goal was disallowed for a foul by Abdoulaye Seck on Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi, a decision that drew criticism after replays suggested minimal contact.

Disciplinary action and appeal

Following the match, CAF had initially imposed fines exceeding $1 million and issued bans to players and officials from both teams, while allowing the result to stand.

However, upon appeal, the governing body revised the outcome, awarding Morocco the title.

The Royal Moroccan Football Federation stated that its appeal was aimed at ensuring proper application of competition rules rather than disputing on-field performance.

Senegal to challenge verdict

Senegal has announced it will challenge the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland. However, such appeals typically take several months to over a year for a final ruling.

Historic win for Morocco

The decision grants Morocco its first Africa Cup of Nations title since 1976, while denying Senegal a second crown in recent editions after its 2021 triumph.

Conclusion

The unprecedented reversal highlights the importance of discipline and adherence to regulations in international football. While Morocco celebrates a historic title, the controversy surrounding the final is likely to remain a talking point until the appeals process concludes.
