Paris: Naomi Osaka paid an emotional tribute to Gael Monfils ahead of his final appearance at the French Open, crediting the French veteran with inspiring generations of Black tennis players around the world.
Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, said Monfils was among the players she admired while growing up and highlighted the importance of representation in professional tennis.
Osaka highlights impact of representation in tennis
Speaking at Roland Garros, Osaka reflected on how seeing successful athletes from similar backgrounds influenced younger players.
She mentioned that on the women’s side she had looked up to Serena Williams and Venus Williams during her early years in tennis.
On the men’s side, Osaka said Monfils and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga played an important role in shaping her perspective.
According to Osaka, the visibility of players from diverse backgrounds encourages younger athletes and creates opportunities for future generations to believe they can succeed at the highest level.
She also praised Monfils for his personality and the way he has represented himself throughout his career.
Monfils reflects on his influence
Monfils, now 39, recently announced that he intends to retire at the end of the 2026 season after a career spanning more than two decades on the ATP Tour.
Although he never secured a Grand Slam singles title, Monfils became one of the most recognisable and popular figures in tennis due to his athletic style, energetic performances and crowd appeal.
Reflecting on his legacy, Monfils acknowledged that he is only beginning to understand the impact he may have had on players and fans.
He said it was difficult to fully recognise influence while actively competing, but expressed gratitude if his journey had encouraged young athletes.
Monfils added that inspiring Black players and helping them believe they could achieve success in tennis carried particular significance for him.
Farewell celebration planned at Roland Garros
Ahead of his final French Open campaign, tournament organisers arranged a special exhibition event titled “Gael & Friends” at Court Philippe-Chatrier.
The exhibition featured several leading players including Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner and Osaka.
The event highlighted Monfils’ popularity within the tennis community and celebrated his contributions to the sport over the years.
His farewell appearance at Roland Garros is expected to attract considerable attention from fans and fellow players as he approaches the final stages of his professional career.
