Palestine’s dream run at the 2025 FIFA Arab World Cup came to an emotional end after a narrow 2–1 loss to Saudi Arabia in the quarterfinals on Thursday. The Fidai, as the Palestinian national team is affectionately known, had stunned football fans by defeating Qatar and drawing with Tunisia to reach the knockout stages for the first time in the tournament’s history.

Despite falling short of the semifinals, the Palestinian squad earned widespread praise for their determination and fearless football. Their spirited performance at Lusail Stadium in Doha pushed Saudi Arabia into extra time, giving the Green Falcons one of their toughest matches of the tournament.

A tense quarterfinal filled with dramatic moments

The match unfolded with high intensity. Saudi Arabia took the lead in the 58th minute when Firas Al-Buraikan converted a penalty. Palestine responded swiftly, with Oudi Dabbagh scoring the equaliser in the 64th minute, bringing the game level and electrifying both sets of supporters.

The deadlock continued through regular time, showcasing Palestine’s strong defence and quick counterattacks. But in the 115th minute, Mohammed Kano struck the decisive blow, securing Saudi Arabia’s 2–1 victory and a place in the semifinals.

Palestine’s journey to the quarterfinals was itself historic. Topping Group A with five points—including a memorable win over Qatar—marked their best-ever performance on the Arab stage.

Tournament outlook and semifinal lineup

Saudi Arabia, who finished second in Group B with six points, extended their unbeaten record against Palestine to 11 matches (six wins, five draws). Their semifinal opponents will be decided by the winner of the Jordan vs Iraq fixture.

In other quarterfinal action, Morocco defeated Syria 1–0 at Khalifa International Stadium. Morocco will now face the winner of Algeria vs United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the semifinals.

Both semifinal matches are scheduled for December 15, 2025, at Al Bayt Stadium. The grand finale of the Arab World Cup will be held on December 18 at Lusail Stadium—also the venue of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Final.
