Lucknow: Rishabh Pant has indicated that he is likely to continue in a top-order role for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) despite an unfortunate dismissal in their IPL 2026 clash against Delhi Capitals (DC).
Pant, who opened the innings alongside Mitchell Marsh, showed early intent before his stay was cut short in bizarre fashion. A straight drive from Marsh deflected off Mukesh Kumar’s hand and crashed into the stumps at the non-striker’s end, resulting in Pant being run out for 7 off 9 balls.
Pant unfazed by freak dismissal
Speaking after the match, Pant made it clear that he would not dwell on the unlucky incident, stressing the importance of moving forward quickly.
“I think the best way to recover from it is to ignore. Something like that, you can’t control, and thinking about it puts you on the back foot,” Pant said.
The LSG skipper’s composed reaction reflected his focus on maintaining momentum rather than over-analysing moments of misfortune.
Top-order role remains on the cards
While Pant stopped short of confirming that he would continue as an opener, he strongly hinted that his place in the batting order would remain near the top.
“I think it’s a 50-50 call, but we’ll see. But you will definitely see me in the top order,” he added.
His statement suggests that LSG are keen to persist with a flexible approach at the top, experimenting with combinations to find the right balance.
Tactical reshuffle explained
Pant also explained the thinking behind LSG’s batting reshuffle. The team has opted to move Nicholas Pooran to the middle order, where he can take charge during the crucial overs.
“The idea was simple. Pooran is taking charge in the middle overs. I’m batting up the order, and we wanted that lefty-righty option so they couldn’t bowl a left-arm spinner early,” Pant said.
The move is part of a broader tactical plan aimed at countering opposition bowling strategies while maximising the strengths of individual players.
Additionally, Pant highlighted the role of Ayush Badoni, who has been promoted to provide stability in case of early wickets.
LSG fall short with the bat
LSG’s new approach at the top, however, did not yield the desired results in this match. The team was bowled out for 141 in 18.4 overs, failing to build meaningful partnerships.
Abdul Samad top-scored with 36, while Mitchell Marsh contributed 35, but the overall batting effort lacked consistency.
Pant admitted that the total was below par on a surface that offered good batting conditions.
“When you score 140, you’re not really going to put the opposition under pressure, especially on a good wicket,” he said.
DC chase led by Rizvi and Stubbs
Delhi Capitals chased down the target with relative ease, reaching 145 for 4 in 17.1 overs. Sameer Rizvi anchored the innings with an unbeaten 70, while Tristan Stubbs provided solid support with 39 not out.
Their partnership ensured that DC comfortably crossed the line, handing LSG a disappointing defeat.
Positives despite defeat
Despite the loss, Pant pointed out positives in the team’s bowling performance and overall fighting spirit. However, he also acknowledged that conceding extras and failing to capitalise on key moments proved costly.
The defeat has left LSG with areas to address, particularly in terms of batting consistency and execution under pressure.
Conclusion
Rishabh Pant’s hint at a continued top-order role signals LSG’s intent to persist with their experimental approach despite an early setback. As the IPL 2026 season progresses, finding the right balance in the batting lineup will be crucial for the team’s success.
With Pant likely to remain a key figure at the top, LSG will hope that stability and results follow in the matches ahead.
