Lahore: The Pakistan Cricket Board has issued a show-cause notice to Naseem Shah following a controversial social media post targeting Maryam Nawaz during the Pakistan Super League 2026.
The fast bowler has been asked to respond within a stipulated time for allegedly violating the terms of his central contract and media regulations.
Controversial post sparks backlash
The controversy erupted after Naseem Shah posted a remark on social media questioning the treatment given to Maryam Nawaz during the PSL opener at Gaddafi Stadium.
The now-deleted post reportedly read: “Why is she being treated like the queen at Lords?” — a comment that quickly drew criticism from fans and observers.
Though the post was deleted shortly after, screenshots circulated widely, triggering a debate online.
Naseem claims account was hacked
In response to the backlash, Naseem clarified that the post was not intentional and claimed that his account had been compromised.
“This account of Naseem was recently hacked but now recovered successfully,” the clarification stated.
Despite the explanation, the PCB proceeded with disciplinary action, indicating the seriousness with which it views players’ conduct on social media.
PCB initiates disciplinary proceedings
In an official statement, the PCB confirmed that proceedings had been initiated against the pacer.
“Naseem Shah is required to provide a response within the stipulated time. The PCB remains committed to upholding professional standards, contractual obligations, and the integrity of the game,” the board said.
However, the board did not specify the exact clauses that were allegedly breached.
Incident during PSL opener
The controversy took place during the PSL 2026 opening match, where Maryam Nawaz attended as the guest of honour. She was welcomed by PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi and introduced to franchise owners and players.
Naseem Shah, who represents Rawalpindi Pindi Boys, is still expected to feature in their upcoming match against Peshawar Zalmi, although the disciplinary process remains ongoing.
Conclusion
The episode highlights the growing scrutiny on athletes’ social media activity and the importance of adhering to professional guidelines. With the PCB taking a firm stance, Naseem Shah’s response will be crucial in determining the outcome of the case.
