Kansas City: England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford believes his team has shown the discipline and composure required to deal with the intense pressure of their FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final against Argentina. With a place in the final at stake, Pickford said the Three Lions are prepared for the emotional battle and will focus on letting their football do the talking.
England determined to avoid distractions
The England-Argentina rivalry is among the most intense in international football, with decades of sporting history and off-field tensions adding extra significance to their latest World Cup meeting. However, Pickford insisted that England have maintained their focus throughout the tournament and have avoided unnecessary controversies.
Speaking at England’s training base in Kansas City, the Everton goalkeeper highlighted the team’s discipline during their World Cup campaign.
“I think you’ve seen throughout the tournament our desire to win tackles. We’ve not got into any scuffles or anything,” Pickford said.
“We’ve been very well respected within the game. Decisions go our way, they don’t go our way, we just reset, we go again and we let the football do the talking.”
Pickford added that England have remained calm even during difficult moments and have not allowed external pressure to affect their performances.
“I think that’s what we’ve done throughout the tournament. Apart from Jarell (Quansah’s red card in Mexico), we’ve not had any suspensions, no second yellow cards or anything like that,” he said.
The goalkeeper believes this mentality will be crucial against Argentina, a team known for its competitive nature and ability to perform under pressure.
Messi threat acknowledged but England confident
Much of the attention ahead of the semi-final has centred around Argentina captain Lionel Messi. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner remains one of the biggest names in football history and will be looking to guide Argentina into another World Cup final.
Pickford admitted that Messi’s presence naturally attracts headlines but insisted England cannot ignore the quality within their own squad.
“Everyone will talk about Messi because he’s one of the GOATs (greatest of all time) of the game,” he said.
“But you can’t look past the ability and the talent we’ve got in the squad – going forward, defensively, togetherness. We’ve got it all there and that’s what we need to put on a show on Wednesday.”
England have relied on a balanced approach throughout the tournament, combining defensive organisation with attacking quality. Pickford believes their collective strength gives them confidence heading into one of the biggest matches of their recent history.
Historic rivalry adds extra intensity
The England-Argentina rivalry has produced some of the most memorable moments in World Cup history. Their encounters have often carried additional emotion due to the political tensions surrounding the Falkland Islands, known as the Malvinas in Argentina.
One of the most famous meetings between the two nations came during the 1986 World Cup quarter-final in Mexico, when Argentina defeated England 2-1. Diego Maradona scored both goals in that match, including the controversial “Hand of God” goal and his iconic solo effort that is widely regarded as one of the greatest goals ever scored.
However, Pickford believes history will not influence England’s approach. For him, the semi-final is about winning a football match and securing a place in the World Cup final.
“It’s us against them to get a place in the final, and it’s a game of football. 90 minutes, 120, penalties,” he said.
“We’re ready for anything, and it’s us against them and it’s about who comes out on top. We’re fully prepared for that.”
England eye first major final in decades
England are aiming to reach the World Cup final and move one step closer to ending their long wait for a major international trophy. The Three Lions last won the World Cup in 1966 and have endured several near misses in recent tournaments.
Pickford has played a key role in England’s recent success, including their run to the Euro 2020 final and strong performances in previous World Cups. His experience and leadership from behind the defence will be vital against an Argentina side packed with attacking talent.
The semi-final in Atlanta promises to be a high-pressure contest between two footballing giants. While Argentina will look towards Messi and their attacking stars for inspiration, England will rely on their squad depth, discipline and belief.
As Pickford stated, England are prepared for every possibility, whether the match is decided in 90 minutes, extra time or penalties. With the final within reach, the goalkeeper believes the team has the mentality required to handle the occasion and deliver on the biggest stage.
