Kolkata: Ajinkya Rahane delivered a strong message of resilience after Kolkata Knight Riders endured a rollercoaster campaign in the Indian Premier League 2026 season, insisting he never considered stepping down as captain or dropping himself despite a poor start.

KKR’s season began in disastrous fashion, with five defeats in their first six matches leaving them at the bottom of the table. However, a spirited comeback — winning six of their last eight games — briefly reignited their playoff hopes before they ultimately fell short.

“Character matters when the team is down”

Addressing the media after KKR’s final game — a 40-run loss to Delhi Capitals — Rahane was asked if he ever thought of relinquishing captaincy or benching himself during the slump.

His response was emphatic.

“I’m never one to back down. When the team is down, it’s very important to show your character at that time,” Rahane said.

The veteran batter emphasised that pressure is a natural part of leadership but must be handled with composure rather than panic.

“It’s very easy when you lose 5-6 matches to think about the past or future. For me, it was important to stay in the moment,” he added.

Personal struggles with the bat

Rahane’s own form mirrored the team’s inconsistency. He scored 335 runs in 14 matches at a strike rate of 135, with his scoring rate outside the Powerplay among the lowest in the competition.

Despite the numbers, Rahane remained focused on maintaining the right mindset rather than dwelling on statistics.

His leadership philosophy drew from past experience — notably when he led India to a historic Test series win in Australia during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2020–21 after the team was bowled out for 36 in Adelaide.

Backing young Indian talent

KKR’s campaign was further disrupted by injuries to key players like Harshit Rana and Akash Deep, along with the unavailability of Mustafizur Rahman due to external factors.

Rather than dwell on setbacks, Rahane chose to invest in domestic players — a move that paid dividends.

“I wanted to give time to the Indian bowlers. I was confident that if we backed them, they would deliver under pressure,” he explained.

Emerging performers shine

Two players who capitalised on their opportunities were:

  • Kartik Tyagi – picked up 18 wickets, emerging as one of KKR’s leading bowlers
  • Anukul Roy – contributed with 9 wickets and crucial lower-order runs in chases

Rahane praised both players for their clarity and confidence.

“For these two guys, this is just the beginning. They have the potential to go and play at the highest level,” he said.

He also highlighted Roy’s strong domestic form in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy as a key reason behind his consistent performances.

Leadership under pressure

Rahane reiterated that leadership during difficult phases is about staying calm and trusting the process rather than making reactive decisions.

His refusal to step down reflects a broader philosophy — that true character is revealed in adversity, not success.

Conclusion

While KKR’s IPL 2026 campaign ultimately ended in disappointment, Ajinkya Rahane’s leadership stood out for its resilience and belief in young talent.

In a season marked by setbacks and inconsistency, his message remained clear: pressure is part of the game, but backing down is not an option.
