Bengaluru: Former India captain and head coach Rahul Dravid has praised teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, describing him as a unique talent and urging cricket fans and coaches not to compare every young player with the rising star.

Dravid made the remarks during the launch of the fifth edition of the Maharaja Trophy T20 in Bengaluru on June 11, highlighting the teenager’s extraordinary achievements and rapid rise in Indian cricket.

Dravid urges fans to avoid comparisons

Speaking at the event, Dravid said players like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi emerge only rarely and should be appreciated for their exceptional abilities rather than being used as benchmarks for every young cricketer.

“Everyone should not be compared with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. He is a unique player. Such players come very rarely. We should recognise and appreciate that,” Dravid said.

His comments come amid growing excitement surrounding the 15-year-old batter, who has become one of the most talked-about young cricketers in the country.

Teenager’s meteoric rise

Sooryavanshi recently earned selection to India’s men’s cricket team at just 15 years of age, making him one of the youngest players ever to receive a national call-up.

The left-handed batter’s selection followed a sensational season with Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2026.

He finished the tournament as the Orange Cap winner, amassing 776 runs at a remarkable strike rate of 237.31. The youngster also smashed 72 sixes during the season, surpassing the previous record held by Chris Gayle.

His performances have drawn comparisons with some of India’s greatest batting talents, although Dravid believes such comparisons should be avoided.

Dravid backs youngster for international success

The former India coach expressed confidence that Sooryavanshi has the potential to enjoy a successful international career if he continues his development at the same pace.

Dravid said the teenager possesses special qualities and hoped he would go on to represent India with distinction and contribute to victories at the highest level.

“He is a special talent and we have to accept that. Hopefully, he continues to perform, goes on to play for India and wins matches for the country,” he added.

The young batter is currently representing India A in a one-day tri-series in Sri Lanka, where he has already shown glimpses of his talent with aggressive batting performances.

Focus shifts to upcoming international assignments

India’s next international assignment is a two-match T20I series against Ireland men’s cricket team in Belfast on June 26 and 28.

The team will then travel to England for a five-match T20I series, where Sooryavanshi could potentially make further strides in his international journey if selected.

Cricket observers will be closely watching the teenager’s progress as he transitions from domestic and developmental cricket to the international stage.

Maharaja Trophy vital for Karnataka cricket

Dravid also emphasised the significance of the Maharaja Trophy in Karnataka’s cricket ecosystem.

According to him, the tournament provides young cricketers with an ideal platform to showcase their abilities while learning to cope with expectations, media attention and competitive pressure.

He noted that exposure to such environments helps players prepare for higher levels of cricket, including domestic competitions, the IPL and international cricket.

“It’s a very important tournament for Karnataka cricket because it gives young boys a great opportunity to showcase their talent. The hype, media coverage and expectations help them develop and prepare for bigger stages,” Dravid said.

Pathway to professional cricket

Over the years, the Maharaja Trophy has emerged as an important pathway for aspiring cricketers in Karnataka.

Several players have used strong performances in the competition to attract the attention of IPL franchises and professional scouts, earning opportunities at higher levels of the game.

With increasing visibility and competition, the tournament continues to play a key role in nurturing future stars of Indian cricket.

Conclusion

Rahul Dravid’s praise for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi underscores the immense promise shown by the teenage batting sensation. While urging fans and coaches not to compare other youngsters with the prodigy, Dravid highlighted the rarity of such talent and expressed hope that Sooryavanshi will continue his remarkable rise and make a lasting impact for India in the years ahead.
