Manchester: Marcus Rashford is set to return to Manchester United as the club steps up its pre-season preparations, with manager Michael Carrick confirming that the forward will rejoin the squad in Dublin.
Rashford’s return marks an important moment for both the player and the club. While his footballing ability remains unquestioned, his comeback is also likely to be judged on his professionalism, consistency and ability to rebuild trust with supporters and teammates.
Rashford set to rejoin United squad
Carrick confirmed that Rashford will be part of Manchester United’s squad travelling to Dublin, alongside Kobbie Mainoo and Lisandro Martinez.
“We have got a full squad this week in Dublin. We fly straight there and have a few days where we have the whole group back together. Marcus is part of that, and Kobbie and Lisandro. We look forward to seeing them,” Carrick said.
Rashford could feature in United’s pre-season fixture against Leeds at Croke Park. He could then potentially get another opportunity against AC Milan in Poland as the club continues preparations for the new campaign.
The fixtures will provide Carrick with an opportunity to assess Rashford’s fitness and determine how he can fit into the team’s attacking plans.
A difficult relationship with Manchester United
Rashford’s return would have appeared unlikely after his relationship with the club deteriorated over the past period.
The England international faced criticism over disciplinary and performance-related issues before publicly expressing his desire for a “new challenge”. Former United manager Ruben Amorim subsequently left him out of the first-team setup, making it clear that players would have to earn their places through their standards and application.
Rashford eventually left Old Trafford on loan, initially joining Aston Villa before moving to Barcelona.
His departure created further disappointment among sections of the Manchester United fanbase, particularly among supporters who had followed his development from the club’s academy into the senior team.
The forward was once viewed as one of United’s most important homegrown players. His struggles and eventual departure, therefore, became one of the more complicated chapters of his career at the club.
Loan spells showed Rashford still has quality
Despite the difficulties at United, Rashford’s performances away from Old Trafford demonstrated that he remains capable of making a significant contribution at the highest level.
During his spell with Aston Villa, he registered 10 goal involvements in 17 appearances. He also contributed to the club’s campaigns in the FA Cup and Champions League, performances that helped him earn a recall to the England squad.
His subsequent move to Barcelona provided another opportunity to demonstrate his ability in a different footballing environment.
Rashford reportedly made a considerable impact alongside some of Europe’s leading attacking players, recording 28 goal contributions in 49 appearances across competitions. Barcelona retained La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup during his time there.
However, the Spanish club ultimately chose not to exercise the option to sign him permanently, paving the way for his return to Manchester United.
United can still benefit from his versatility
Rashford’s best campaign remains the 2022-23 season, when he scored 30 goals across all competitions for United.
At his best, the forward offers pace, direct running and an ability to attack the space behind defensive lines. Those qualities could provide United with another attacking dimension as Carrick works on shaping his squad.
Rashford can operate from the left or through the centre, giving the manager tactical flexibility. His ability to move between positions could also complement the club’s other attacking options, including Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko.
However, simply having Rashford available will not solve United’s attacking problems. His effectiveness will depend on whether he can maintain his intensity and consistency throughout the campaign.
Carrick faces a delicate management challenge
One of Carrick’s biggest challenges will be ensuring that Rashford’s return does not disrupt the standards established within the squad.
The manager has previously worked with Rashford at Manchester United, meaning he already understands the player’s strengths and personality. That familiarity could help the pair establish a productive working relationship.
At the same time, Carrick will need to ensure that Rashford is treated in the same way as every other member of the squad.
United are believed to have benefited from greater harmony and discipline within the group. Any successful reintegration will therefore require Rashford to accept the team’s expectations and compete for his position.
His previous relationship with Carrick could be an advantage, but it cannot become a reason for preferential treatment.
Supporters will expect more than goals
For Rashford, winning back the supporters could be just as important as finding his place in the starting XI.
Many United fans watched him progress through the academy before becoming one of the club’s most recognisable players. His decision to seek a move away from Old Trafford left some supporters disappointed.
A goal against Leeds or an impressive pre-season performance would be a positive start, but it would not immediately erase the concerns that developed during his difficult period at the club.
Rashford will need to demonstrate his commitment over a sustained period. Consistent performances, professionalism, defensive effort and intensity will all play a role in rebuilding his reputation.
A second chance at Old Trafford
Rashford’s experiences at Aston Villa and Barcelona could ultimately benefit him. Playing under different managers and adapting to different tactical systems may have given him a broader understanding of what is required to succeed away from the familiar environment of Manchester United.
The opening months of the season will therefore be particularly significant.
For United, the expectation should not simply be for Rashford to recreate his 30-goal campaign. The priority will be to see whether he can consistently meet the standards demanded by Carrick and contribute to the team’s collective objectives.
If he competes strongly for his position, maintains his discipline and delivers consistently, supporters could gradually begin to embrace him once again.
Rashford’s return is therefore better viewed as a second chance than a complete reset. The player, squad and expectations have all changed since his previous spell at the club.
The opportunity is now there for Rashford to turn a difficult chapter into a genuine comeback. But this time, rebuilding his place at Manchester United and winning back the trust of its supporters will have to be earned through his actions on and off the pitch.
