Bengaluru: The future of Royal Challengers Bengaluru has been a major talking point following its record-breaking sale, but early indications suggest the team’s name is unlikely to change.
A consortium led by the Aditya Birla Group has acquired 100 per cent stake in the franchise for USD 1.78 billion (approximately ₹16,706 crore), making it the most expensive team in Indian Premier League history.
Ananya Birla’s post sparks clarity
Speculation over a possible rebranding gained traction soon after the deal was announced. However, a social media post by Ananya Birla appears to have put those rumours to rest.
Ananya, a prominent figure within the Aditya Birla Group, reshared an Instagram story suggesting that the franchise name will remain unchanged — a subtle but strong indication that “Royal Challengers Bengaluru” will continue as is.
Record-breaking deal
The acquisition marks a landmark moment for the Indian Premier League, underlining the soaring valuation of franchise cricket.
The sellers, United Spirits Limited, confirmed the transaction in an official statement following a board meeting.
According to the company, the deal involves the sale of its wholly owned subsidiary, Royal Challengers Sports Private Limited (RCSPL), to the consortium in an all-cash transaction worth ₹166.6 billion.
Who are the new owners?
The consortium includes a mix of global and domestic heavyweights:
- Aditya Birla Group
- Blackstone Inc. (through its BXPE strategy)
- Bolt Ventures
- The Times Group
Together, they will assume full ownership and operational control of both the men’s IPL team and the women’s team competing in the Women’s Premier League.
End of strategic review
The sale concludes a strategic review process initiated by United Spirits on November 5, 2025, aimed at evaluating the future of its cricketing assets.
With the transaction, the consortium will gain complete rights to operate the franchise across both leagues.
A historic franchise
RCB are among the original eight teams that have been part of the IPL since its inception in 2008. Despite years of near misses, the franchise finally secured its maiden IPL title in 2025 — a milestone that significantly boosted its brand value ahead of the sale.
What lies ahead?
While ownership has changed hands, the early signals suggest continuity in branding — a move that could preserve the strong identity and fan loyalty RCB has built over the years.
If Ananya Birla’s indication holds true, fans can expect the team to retain its iconic name even under new management, ensuring that the legacy of Royal Challengers Bengaluru remains intact.
