Bengaluru: The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) has announced a heartfelt tribute to the 11 fans who lost their lives in last year’s tragic stampede, confirming that 11 seats will remain permanently reserved at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium during all matches of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season.
The initiative comes as the stadium prepares to host its first IPL match since the June 4, 2025 tragedy, which occurred during celebrations following RCB’s maiden title win. The reserved seats will remain unoccupied as a mark of respect, symbolising a silent and permanent memorial within the venue.
RCB’s tribute also includes players wearing jersey number 11 during practice sessions throughout the season. Additionally, a memorial plaque will be installed near the stadium’s inner entrance, offering fans a dedicated space for remembrance.
The announcement was made by RCB CEO Rajesh Menon and Director of Cricket Mo Babat during a press conference in Bengaluru on Tuesday.

A new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) has been implemented jointly by RCB, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), and security agencies.
One of the key upgrades includes the installation of an AI-powered CCTV surveillance system with over 300 cameras. According to Rajesh Menon, the system is capable of providing real-time alerts on crowd density and queue build-ups, enabling faster response from law enforcement and stadium officials.
Entry and exit points at the stadium have also been reconfigured based on expert recommendations to ensure smoother movement and reduce congestion risks.

In the aftermath of the 2025 incident, the M Chinnaswamy Stadium lost its status as a premier cricket venue. It was stripped of hosting rights for key international events, including the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
The Karnataka government withheld necessary police clearances, citing inadequate infrastructure and emergency preparedness. This led to a period of isolation for the stadium, once considered one of India’s most iconic cricket venues.
A rigorous rehabilitation process followed, including structural upgrades, safety audits, and the introduction of advanced digital monitoring systems. Only after meeting all compliance requirements was the venue cleared to host IPL matches again.
Logistical changes for fans
To prevent overcrowding and ensure safer match-day experiences, RCB and stadium authorities have introduced several logistical changes for fans.
A major shift has been made towards digital ticketing, with 80 to 90 per cent of tickets being issued as mobile tickets through official platforms. This move aims to streamline entry processes and reduce physical crowding at ticket counters.
In a significant step towards integrated transport planning, every ticket holder will receive a complimentary metro ride. Fans will also be able to book parking at metro stations, as private vehicle drop-offs near the stadium will no longer be permitted.
Additionally, stadium gates will open four hours before the start of each match, allowing staggered entry and minimising last-minute rushes.
Raipur to host additional matches
While Bengaluru remains the primary home for RCB, the franchise has shifted two of its home matches to Raipur for the 2026 season. The decision was taken in coordination with the Chhattisgarh government, which offered to host the fixtures.
RCB has also cancelled its popular pre-season “Unboxing” event at the Chinnaswamy Stadium this year, prioritising safety and crowd control measures.
When asked about internal investigations into the stampede incident, Rajesh Menon declined to provide details, stating that the matter remains sub judice. He, however, assured that the franchise has fully cooperated with all inquiry agencies.
