As Royal Challengers Bengaluru prepare to begin their IPL 2026 campaign, the reopening of M. Chinnaswamy Stadium carries deep emotional significance following last year’s tragic incident that claimed 11 lives.

The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), along with the franchise, has announced a series of tributes to honour the victims and ensure their memory endures.

Memorial plaque to preserve memory

According to reports, a memorial plaque will be installed within the stadium premises ahead of the opening match against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

The plaque is expected to be placed near the inner entrance, close to an existing mural, creating a permanent space for reflection within the venue.

Dedicated seats for victims

In a symbolic gesture, 11 seats inside the stadium will be permanently reserved in memory of those who lost their lives. These seats will remain unsold during IPL and international matches.

The seats are likely to be grouped together in a prominent stand, serving as a visible reminder of the lives lost.

Match-day tributes planned

Ahead of the IPL 2026 opener, the stadium will observe a minute’s silence, and the names of the victims will be displayed as a mark of respect.

Players from both RCB and the visiting team are expected to participate in the tribute, reflecting a shared moment of solidarity.

Balancing celebration with remembrance

While the stadium prepares to host cricket once again, the occasion will not merely mark a return to sport but also a moment of collective remembrance.

The tragic incident continues to resonate across Bengaluru, and the planned initiatives underline an effort to honour the victims while moving forward with sensitivity and respect.
