Guwahati: India opener Rohit Sharma added another remarkable milestone to his ODI career on Wednesday, becoming the first batter in the history of the format to hit 200 sixes in a single country.

Rohit achieved the feat during India’s second ODI against the West Indies at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. The veteran opener produced another trademark display of power-hitting as India began their daunting chase of 406.

With his latest milestone, Rohit moved well clear of West Indies great Chris Gayle, who hit 147 ODI sixes in a single country during his international career.

Rohit reaches 200 sixes on home soil

Rohit’s ability to clear the boundary has been one of the defining features of his ODI career, and his latest achievement further underlines his remarkable consistency in the format.

The 39-year-old reached the 200-six mark while taking on the West Indies bowling attack in India’s chase. His aggressive start provided momentum as India attempted to overhaul a huge target.

Gayle previously held the record for most ODI sixes by a batter in a single country, with 147 in the West Indies. Rohit’s achievement therefore represents a significant statistical milestone in one-day international cricket.

The Indian opener has long been among the most prolific six-hitters in the history of ODI cricket. His latest record adds another distinction to a career already filled with major landmarks.

India face 406-run target

Rohit’s milestone came after the West Indies produced a massive batting performance in the first innings.

The visitors posted 405/7 in their allotted 50 overs, putting India under considerable pressure in the second ODI.

John Campbell and West Indies captain Shai Hope scored centuries to lay the foundation for the imposing total. Hope also made the most of two dropped catches during his innings.

Amir Jangoo then provided a spectacular finish to the West Indies innings. The batter accelerated dramatically in the latter stages, moving from 59 off 54 balls to a century from just 70 deliveries.

The combined efforts of the West Indies top and middle order helped the visitors cross the 400-run mark and set India a target of 406.

Rohit enters 12,000 ODI runs club

Rohit also reached another major milestone during the match, becoming only the third Indian batter to score 12,000 runs in men’s ODI cricket.

He joined an elite group featuring Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli, two other Indian batting legends who have crossed the landmark.

Rohit reached 12,000 ODI runs in his 282nd innings, making him the second-fastest batter to reach the figure in terms of innings played.

Virat Kohli holds the record for reaching 12,000 ODI runs in the fewest innings, achieving the feat in 242 innings. Tendulkar reached the milestone in 300 innings, while former Australia captain Ricky Ponting and Sri Lanka great Kumar Sangakkara took 314 and 336 innings respectively.

The landmark is another addition to Rohit’s extensive ODI record. His career has included numerous batting records, including his three ODI double centuries and the highest individual score in men’s ODI cricket, 264.

At 39, Rohit’s continued presence at the top level has allowed him to add further milestones to an already decorated international career.
