Months after the Sydney ODI in Australia, a moment of calm on-field guidance from Rohit Sharma to young pacer Harshit Rana has resurfaced online, capturing fans’ attention once again.
Breakout spell under pressure
Rana, 23, finished the match with impressive figures of 4 for 39, a performance that helped silence critics who had questioned his inclusion in India’s ODI squad for the tour. Australia, cruising at 183 for 3, appeared well set for a big total, with Matt Renshaw scoring his maiden ODI fifty.
However, Rana’s incisive spell triggered a dramatic collapse, as the hosts lost seven wickets for 53 runs and were bowled out for 236 — a turning point that decisively swung the game in India’s favour.
‘Take a slip’ — advice that paid off
Speaking on the MensXP Podcast, Rana recalled a key moment from the match. He revealed that while captain Shubman Gill had suggested placing a slip fielder, he was initially hesitant due to lack of movement off the pitch.
Rohit Sharma then stepped in, questioned his hesitation, and convinced him to go with the attacking option. The very next ball produced a wicket. Rohit reportedly told Rana to keep a slip in place for every new batter — advice that left a lasting impression.
Dominant Indian showing
India’s authority in the match was further cemented by Rohit’s fluent century — his 33rd in ODIs and ninth against Australia — while Virat Kohli added an unbeaten 74 to seal a comprehensive win.
Though the match is now history, Rana says Rohit’s clarity and instinct under pressure is a lesson he will carry throughout his international career.
