Sachin Tendulkar, the legendary cricketer known as the Master Blaster, is making a highly anticipated return to cricket with the launch of the International Masters League (IML). This inaugural season is set to take place in November across Mumbai, Lucknow, and Raipur, reigniting classic rivalries among some of the sport’s greatest players.
The IML will feature six teams representing cricketing powerhouses: India, England, Australia, Sri Lanka, South Africa, and the West Indies. This tournament aims to provide a platform for retired cricket stars to showcase their skills in a competitive environment, offering fans a chance to relive the thrilling matchups of the past.
Although the specific dates for the matches are yet to be confirmed, the excitement surrounding the league is already palpable. The collaboration between Tendulkar and his idol, Sunil Gavaskar, who serves as the league’s commissioner, adds to the event’s prestige. Together with PMG Sports and Sportfive, two of India’s leading sports management firms, they aim to create a memorable experience for players and fans alike.
Tendulkar, now 51 years old and retired from competitive cricket for nearly 11 years, remains an icon revered by millions. His decision to return to the pitch stems from an enduring love for the game and a desire to create magic once again.
“Cricket continues to grow in popularity not just in India, but across the world. In the last decade, T20 cricket has accelerated its adoption, drawing new fans into the game,” Tendulkar stated. He emphasised that the competitive spirit in athletes never truly fades, stating, “Sportspersons never retire at heart, and the competitive streak within waits for an opportunity to get back on the field.”
He envisions the IML as a celebration of cricket, uniting passionate fans with competitive cricketers eager to perform at their best. “I am certain all players participating will get back into the groove and prepare hard. When we represent our countries, we all want to play top-quality cricket and try to win,” he added.
Since retiring from international cricket in November 2013, Tendulkar has made several appearances in various formats. He played in an exhibition match at Lord’s in 2014 and took part in the Cricket All-Stars Series in 2015, where he captained the Sachin Blasters against Shane Warne’s Warne Warriors in a three-match T20I series in Los Angeles.
In 2020, he was set to play in a charity match in Australia but had to withdraw due to an injury. However, he did make an appearance in 2021 and 2022 during the Road Safety World Series, leading the India Legends to victory in both editions. His last performance was in an exhibition match called ‘One World vs One Family,’ where he scored 27 runs off 16 balls.
Sunil Gavaskar, currently providing commentary for the ongoing India vs. Bangladesh Test match, shared his thoughts on the upcoming IML. He expressed hope that the tournament will evoke nostalgia for fans, allowing them to relive cherished cricketing moments.
“T20 cricket’s rise offers a fantastic opportunity to relive the magic of the sport we love. The International Masters League will bring fans closer to the legends they’ve admired for years,” Gavaskar said. He described the tournament as more than just a series of matches; it’s a celebration of cricket history, where unforgettable moments will be reignited, inviting everyone to join in and create new memories together.
The International Masters League promises to be an exciting chapter in the world of cricket, showcasing legends who have shaped the game. With Tendulkar and Gavaskar at the helm, fans can look forward to an exhilarating experience that celebrates the sport and its rich history. As the tournament approaches, anticipation builds for the return of cricketing icons to the field, ready to inspire a new generation of fans.
