A group of Salesian nuns from Texas has become an unlikely sensation after their enthusiastic support for the San Antonio Spurs during the NBA Western Conference Finals captured widespread attention.
Wearing Spurs jerseys over their religious habits, the sisters were seen cheering from the stands and even offering prayers and blessings for the players before the game, delighting basketball fans and social media users alike.
Faith, sports and community
The women belong to the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, also known as the Salesian Sisters of St. John Bosco, a Catholic religious congregation dedicated to serving young people and families.
For the sisters, supporting the Spurs is about much more than basketball. They view sports as a powerful way to connect with young people, promote values and build meaningful relationships.
Sister Margaret Natal explained that their prayers are not focused on winning games but on encouraging sportsmanship and responsibility.
“We pray that they play to the best of their ability and understand their responsibility as role models,” she said.
More than two decades of support
The sisters’ connection with the Spurs stretches back more than 20 years.
According to Sister Bernadette Mota, the tradition began with elderly sisters at the congregation’s retirement home who were passionate supporters of the team. Their enthusiasm was passed on to younger generations of sisters, creating a lasting bond with the franchise.
Over the years, the relationship grew stronger. The sisters even had the opportunity to meet legendary Spurs coach Gregg Popovich and several players following one of the team’s championship victories.
Support rooted in respect
Sister Mota said the congregation continues to cherish its connection with the Spurs because of the respect the organisation has shown toward religious women and the Church.
The sisters also clarified that they do not purchase tickets for games, believing it would not be a responsible use of their resources. Instead, they attend only when tickets are gifted and typically watch games through free television broadcasts.
A heartwarming story beyond basketball
The story has resonated with fans because it highlights how sports can bring together people from different backgrounds through shared passion and community spirit.
For the Salesian Sisters, cheering for the Spurs remains another way of living their mission of accompaniment, encouragement and connection with the wider community. #SalesianSisters #SanAntonioSpurs #NBA #FaithAndSports #InspiringStories #newskarnataka
