Belfast: Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has cautioned Sanju Samson to be “careful” after his disappointing performance in the first T20I against Ireland, highlighting growing competition within the Indian squad.
India suffered a shocking 34-run defeat to Ireland in the opening match of the two-game T20I series at the Civil Service Cricket Club. The loss marked India’s first-ever defeat to Ireland in T20 internationals after previously winning eight consecutive matches against them.
Early dismissal raises concerns
Sanju Samson, opening the innings alongside Abhishek Sharma, failed to make an impact, scoring just 5 runs off four balls before being dismissed by Jai Moondra. His early exit set the tone for India’s struggling batting effort as the team failed to chase down the target.
Manjrekar pointed out that Samson cannot afford complacency, especially with young talent Vaibhav Sooryavanshi waiting in the wings for an opportunity.
He noted that Sooryavanshi is “breathing down the neck” of both Samson and Abhishek Sharma, signalling increased competition for opening spots in the T20 side.
Debate over team selection
Despite his warning, Manjrekar also acknowledged that including Sooryavanshi in the playing XI might not have significantly altered the outcome of the match. He explained that the nature of the chase required an aggressive start and sustained momentum, which proved difficult under the conditions.
According to him, even if Sooryavanshi had played, the challenging conditions and steep target would have made the task equally demanding. He added that the youngster may have marginally improved the situation but not dramatically changed the result.
Ireland script historic win
Ireland produced a disciplined performance to register a memorable victory. Bowling first, they set a competitive target and then restricted India to 148 in 18.5 overs.
Matthew Hollard and Matthew Humphreys starred with the ball, picking up three wickets each and dismantling the Indian batting line-up. Their efforts ensured that India never gained control of the chase.
The win holds historical significance for Ireland, as it is their first T20I victory over India.
Disappointing start under new leadership
The match also marked a tough beginning for India under new captain Shreyas Iyer, who is leading a revamped squad. The team’s batting unit, despite featuring experienced players, struggled to cope with the pressure and conditions.
India’s inability to build partnerships or accelerate at key moments exposed gaps in execution, raising questions about team balance and strategy.
Increasing competition in squad
Manjrekar’s remarks underline the increasing depth in Indian cricket, where emerging players are constantly pushing for selection. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who was expected to make his debut, remains a strong contender for future matches.
Such competition is likely to keep established players on their toes, ensuring higher performance standards within the team.
Conclusion
Sanju Samson’s poor outing against Ireland has once again put the spotlight on his consistency at the international level. With young players waiting for their chance, the pressure to perform has intensified. As India looks to bounce back in the series, the team management may have to make crucial decisions regarding its playing XI.
