New Delhi: Sanju Samson delivered a composed, match-winning innings for the Chennai Super Kings, but it was his team-first mindset that grabbed as much attention as his batting.
Samson remained unbeaten on 87 off 52 balls against the Delhi Capitals at Kotla, guiding CSK to their fifth win of the season.
‘Would’ve had to be selfish’
Speaking after the match to Harsha Bhogle, Samson made it clear why he didn’t chase a personal milestone.
“A hundred is always special. But for that, I would have had to be a bit selfish… I thought it was better to win the match for the team.”
At one stage, Samson was 22 off 22 balls, carefully stabilising the innings after CSK slipped to 45/2. Once set, he accelerated smartly, targeting the spinners and shifting momentum.
Match-defining partnership
Samson’s knock was supported by a crucial unbeaten stand with Kartik Sharma:
- 114 runs partnership
- Came off just 66 balls
- Effectively sealed the chase of 155
The duo ensured there were no late hiccups, finishing the game comfortably.
Gavaskar, Sehwag praise mindset
Cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar praised Samson’s maturity and patience.
“Patience brings great rewards. He got set and then accelerated… he played for the team.”
Former opener Virender Sehwag also highlighted Samson’s improved game awareness:
- Focus on percentage cricket
- Attacking only balls in his zone
- Noticeable growth in decision-making
Leading from the front
With this innings, Samson continues his strong season:
- Over 400 runs so far
- Currently among the top run-scorers
- Only player with two centuries this season
His consistency is proving vital for CSK, especially in the absence of MS Dhoni.
A knock beyond numbers
While the 87* stood out statistically, it was Samson’s temperament under pressure that defined the innings:
- Absorbed early pressure
- Built his innings patiently
- Prioritised the team over milestones
For fans at Kotla, it was a reminder that leadership isn’t just about big scores — but about making the right decisions at the right time.
