Former Bangladesh cricket captain Shakib Al Hasan’s ancestral home in Magura district was attacked and vandalised just hours after he appeared alongside former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during her virtual press conference announcing plans to return to Bangladesh in December.
According to reports, unidentified assailants hurled a petrol bomb at the property in the Keshabmor area of Magura at around 8.45 pm local time on Wednesday. The attackers also vandalised parts of the house before fleeing.
Attack follows Hasina’s announcement
The incident occurred shortly after Sheikh Hasina, who is currently outside Bangladesh, addressed supporters through a virtual press conference. During the event, she announced her intention to return to Bangladesh in December and was joined virtually by several supporters, including Shakib Al Hasan.
Within hours of the online event, the former cricketer’s ancestral residence came under attack, drawing widespread attention amid the country’s continuing political tensions.
No injuries reported
Initial reports indicate that no one was injured in the attack. However, the property sustained damage due to the petrol bomb and vandalism.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. Officials are working to identify those responsible and determine whether the attack was directly linked to Shakib’s participation in the virtual event.
Political tensions continue
Bangladesh has witnessed heightened political tensions in recent months following the country’s political developments. Shakib, one of Bangladesh’s most celebrated cricketers, has also remained in the spotlight due to his previous political association with Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League.
While the timing of the attack has raised questions, officials have not yet confirmed any direct connection between the incident and the virtual press conference.
