Auckland: India captain Shreyas Iyer has surpassed former skipper Rohit Sharma to become the country’s highest run-scorer as a T20 International captain in a calendar year. Iyer crossed the 656-run mark set by Rohit in 2022 during India’s fourth T20I against New Zealand at Eden Park, Auckland, on October 30.
Iyer reached 657 runs as India’s T20I captain in 2026, achieving the milestone in 25 matches. Rohit had scored 656 runs in 29 matches during the 2022 calendar year.
The record came despite India suffering an 87-run defeat in the fourth match. New Zealand’s victory reduced India’s lead in the five-match series to 3-1, but the visitors had already secured the series by winning the first three games.
Iyer moves past Rohit’s 2022 tally
Rohit Sharma had established the previous Indian record with 656 runs in T20 internationals as captain in 2022. His tally came during a busy year in which he led India in 29 matches in the shortest international format.
Iyer entered the New Zealand series with an opportunity to challenge that benchmark. He had accumulated 632 runs as captain in 22 T20Is before the second match of the series, leaving him 25 runs short of Rohit’s record.
He subsequently moved closer to the milestone and completed the record-breaking achievement during the fourth T20I in Auckland.
With 657 runs, Iyer became the first Indian captain to cross Rohit’s previous calendar-year total in men’s T20 internationals. He also reached the mark in fewer matches than his predecessor.
Iyer’s record comes during a successful leadership year
Iyer took over India’s T20I captaincy from Suryakumar Yadav in June 2026. His appointment marked a new phase for the team in the shortest format, and his batting performances have been a major feature of his leadership tenure.
His run-scoring consistency has helped him close in on and eventually pass Rohit’s record. The achievement also places him ahead of other Indian captains who have produced substantial batting returns in a calendar year.
Rohit had held the benchmark since 2022, while Suryakumar Yadav scored 484 runs as India’s T20I captain in 2026, according to the figures reported before Iyer crossed the record.
The milestone is specific to runs scored by Indian captains in T20 internationals during a calendar year. It should not be confused with the overall record for most runs by a captain in T20I cricket worldwide.
New Zealand dominate fourth T20I in Auckland
The record was achieved in a match that otherwise belonged to New Zealand. After India captain Iyer elected to field, the hosts produced a powerful batting performance to post 259/7 in their 20 overs.
Glenn Phillips led the innings with a stunning 107 from 49 deliveries, including six fours and 10 sixes. Michael Bracewell added 65 from just 25 balls, helping New Zealand build a total that put India under considerable pressure.
India’s chase began poorly. Jacob Duffy struck twice in the opening over, dismissing Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan. His four-wicket haul of 4/23 was instrumental in restricting the visitors.
India eventually managed 172/9 in 20 overs, losing by 87 runs. The result gave New Zealand their first victory of the series after India had won the opening three matches.
Rohit’s record remains part of India’s T20I history
Rohit Sharma’s 656 runs in 2022 reflected his substantial contribution as India’s T20I captain. He later led the team to the 2024 T20 World Cup title before retiring from the format.
His record stood for four years before Iyer moved past it in 2026. The achievement adds another statistical milestone to Iyer’s captaincy and highlights his batting contribution during the year.
At the international level, Pakistan’s Babar Azam holds the record for the most runs scored as a T20I captain in a calendar year, with 939 runs in 2021. Iyer’s achievement is therefore India’s national captaincy record, rather than the all-time global benchmark.
Final T20I awaits India and New Zealand
India will enter the fifth and final T20I with a 3-1 series lead. The concluding match is scheduled to take place in Hamilton on November 1.
While New Zealand will look to finish the series with another victory, India will aim to end the contest on a winning note.
For Iyer, the Auckland match brought an individual landmark despite the team’s defeat. By reaching 657 runs as India’s T20I captain in 2026, he moved past Rohit’s long-standing mark and established a new calendar-year benchmark for Indian captains in the format.
