India captain Shreyas Iyer has urged his teammates to embrace a fearless mindset ahead of the T20I series against Zimbabwe national cricket team, following a difficult stretch where India national cricket team failed to win any of their last seven matches.
Speaking before the series opener, Iyer made it clear that external criticism should not dictate how the team plays.
“I don’t think they should fear failure. When you have such thoughts, you play to save yourself. When you don’t have that fear, you get the best out of yourself.”
Learning from a tough England tour
India come into the Zimbabwe series after a disappointing white-ball run in England and Ireland. Despite the results, Iyer believes the phase has helped the team grow stronger together.
He highlighted that the team has:
- Identified key areas to improve
- Focused on awareness and adaptability
- Built stronger team bonding through shared challenges
According to Iyer, setbacks can often be valuable if teams learn and evolve from them.
Adapting quickly the key challenge
With matches scheduled immediately after arrival, Iyer admitted that adapting to Zimbabwe conditions will be crucial.
“Some of us are playing here for the first time, so the quicker we adapt, the better results we will get.”
The tight schedule — with just one training session before the first match — adds another layer of difficulty for the visitors.
Backing youngsters, including Vaibhav Sooryavanshi
Iyer also threw his support behind young players like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, whose debut didn’t go as planned.
He expressed confidence that the youngster and others in the squad will learn quickly from recent experiences.
“They’ve had time to reflect and practice. He must have rectified where he went wrong.”
The captain emphasised that young players should focus on improvement rather than pressure.
Respect for Zimbabwe’s challenge
Iyer acknowledged that Zimbabwe will not be easy opponents, pointing out their growing strength and experience, including players familiar with franchise leagues like the IPL.
This makes the upcoming series a competitive test, rather than a straightforward comeback opportunity for India.
Stronger mentally after injury comeback
Reflecting on his own journey, Iyer said his return from injury has made him mentally tougher and more confident.
He stressed the importance of:
- Quick analysis of mistakes
- Strong execution under pressure
- Staying positive through ups and downs
The bigger picture
For India, the Zimbabwe series is more than just results — it’s about resetting mindset and building momentum.
Iyer’s message is simple but powerful:
- Ignore outside noise
- Stay present
- Play as a unit
- Be fearless
If the team embraces this approach, the series could mark a turning point after a challenging phase.
