Mumbai: Newly appointed India T20I captain Shreyas Iyer has made it clear that he intends to lead the national team in his own way, saying he will remain true to his personality and will not operate under anyone else’s shadow. The Mumbai batter described captaincy as a challenge he embraces and believes his competitive upbringing has prepared him for the responsibility.
Iyer will begin a new chapter in his career after being named India’s T20I captain for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England, ushering in a fresh phase for the national team’s white-ball setup.
Iyer embraces leadership challenge
Speaking at a promotional event for the Kabuni Premier League in Mumbai, Iyer reflected on the competitive cricket culture in the city and how it shaped his mindset.
According to the 30-year-old, growing up in Mumbai’s highly competitive cricket environment taught him to embrace challenges and develop a winning mentality.
He said taking responsibility has always motivated him and that captaincy presents another opportunity to test himself at the highest level. Iyer added that while leadership comes with expectations, he has no intention of changing who he is to fit a particular mould.
His remarks have attracted attention because of the emphasis on maintaining his individuality while leading the national side.
‘I won’t be under someone’s shadow’
One of Iyer’s comments generated significant discussion within cricket circles when he stated that he would not try to become someone else or function under another person’s shadow.
The statement has sparked speculation among fans and analysts, particularly because of his previous association with Gautam Gambhir during their time together at Kolkata Knight Riders.
During the 2024 IPL season, Iyer captained Kolkata Knight Riders to the title while Gambhir served as mentor. Although Iyer was widely praised for his leadership on the field, much of the attention surrounding the team’s success focused on Gambhir’s influence.
Neither Iyer nor Gambhir has publicly acknowledged any disagreement, and there is no official indication that Iyer’s remarks were directed at any individual. However, the comments have fuelled debate about his leadership philosophy as he takes charge of the national side.
Rise to India’s T20I captaincy
Iyer’s appointment follows an impressive run as a leader in franchise cricket.
After guiding Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024, he led Punjab Kings to the IPL final in 2025. His calm approach, tactical awareness and ability to manage pressure situations earned widespread praise.
Even though Punjab Kings did not qualify for the IPL 2026 playoffs, Iyer continued to impress both as a captain and batter.
He scored 498 runs during the 2026 IPL season at an average of 55.23 and a strike rate of 168.81, reinforcing his credentials as one of India’s leading white-ball players.
New era begins after leadership change
The selectors’ decision marks the beginning of a new T20I cycle as India build towards future international tournaments, including the next T20 World Cup and the Asian Games.
Iyer succeeds Suryakumar Yadav, whose tenure as captain came to an end despite overseeing a successful period for the national side.
Reports indicate that Suryakumar welcomed the appointment and expressed happiness that Mumbai continues to produce leaders for Indian cricket.
The transition is expected to bring a fresh direction to the team while maintaining the aggressive brand of cricket India have adopted in recent years.
First assignment against Ireland
Iyer’s first series as India captain will be the upcoming T20I tour of Ireland.
India are scheduled to play two T20 internationals against Ireland men’s cricket team before travelling to face the England men’s cricket team in a five-match T20I series.
The squad includes vice-captain Tilak Varma, returning pacer Harshit Rana and several emerging players, offering Iyer an opportunity to shape the team’s identity ahead of future tournaments.
Focus on building India’s future
With leadership responsibilities now firmly in his hands, Iyer faces the challenge of guiding a new generation of Indian cricketers while balancing expectations from fans and selectors.
His message, however, remains clear: he intends to lead with authenticity, trust his instincts and chart his own course as India’s T20I captain.
As India prepare for a new chapter in the shortest format, all eyes will be on how Iyer translates his leadership success from franchise cricket to the international stage.
