Ahmedabad: Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill delivered an honest and unsparing assessment of his team’s performance after their crushing 92-run defeat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Qualifier 1 of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Chasing a massive target of 255 runs, Gujarat Titans faltered under pressure, with their top-order failing to provide the much-needed start. Gill himself could not contribute significantly, while star batter Jos Buttler also failed to make an impact. Adding to their woes was an unfortunate dismissal of Sai Sudharsan, which further derailed the chase.
Rajat Patidar’s explosive innings powers RCB
The match was largely defined by a sensational innings from RCB captain Rajat Patidar, who remained unbeaten on 93 runs off just 33 deliveries. His aggressive batting laid the foundation for RCB’s imposing total of 254 runs.
Patidar’s innings included a flurry of boundaries and sixes, putting immense pressure on the Gujarat bowlers. His knock was complemented by disciplined bowling from RCB’s pace attack, which dismantled Gujarat’s batting lineup early in the innings.
Fielding lapses prove costly for Gujarat
One of the key turning points in the match was Gujarat Titans’ poor fielding display. Patidar was dropped twice during his innings, allowing him to capitalise on the reprieves and convert his start into a match-winning performance.
The first chance was put down by Kulwant Khejroliya, followed by another missed opportunity by Kagiso Rabada. These dropped catches proved extremely expensive, as Patidar went on to dominate the opposition bowlers.
Gill acknowledged these lapses as a major factor behind the defeat.
“I think we were going pretty well up until the 12th or 13th over, but our fielding was not at par. Dropping a couple of catches and our ground fielding was not up to the mark,” Gill said after the match.
Pressure situations expose weaknesses
Gill further admitted that while the team’s intent and intensity were present, they failed to execute under pressure. He emphasised that such errors are discussed regularly during team meetings and practice sessions, but the players could not deliver in this crucial encounter.
“It is something we address in team meetings and practice sessions. But I don’t think it was our day. The intensity was there, but under pressure situations, we were not up to the mark,” he added.
The Gujarat captain also spoke about the challenges of chasing a high total, stating that a strong start in the powerplay could have made a significant difference.
“If we had got a good start in the powerplay, on a ground like this where the ball travels quickly, any target could have been chaseable,” Gill explained.
Gujarat Titans look ahead to eliminator clash
Despite the heavy loss, Gujarat Titans still have an opportunity to bounce back in the tournament. They will now face the winner of the Eliminator between Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad for a place in the final.
The team will need to regroup quickly and address their shortcomings, particularly in fielding and top-order batting, if they hope to stay in contention for the title.
Conclusion
The defeat serves as a wake-up call for Gujarat Titans, highlighting the importance of consistency and composure in high-pressure matches. While individual brilliance from Rajat Patidar powered RCB into their second consecutive IPL final, Gujarat’s lapses in execution ultimately cost them dearly.
As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on Shubman Gill and his team to see whether they can learn from their mistakes and stage a comeback when it matters most.
