New Delhi: Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has been appointed head coach of Delhi Capitals for the 2027 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, marking his first head coaching role in the IPL.

Delhi Capitals officially announced Ganguly’s appointment on Tuesday, October 6, bringing him into the franchise’s coaching setup after several years in senior leadership and advisory roles. He has been associated with the Capitals since 2019 and has previously served as an advisor and Director of Cricket for both the men’s and women’s teams.

Ganguly replaces the coaching setup led by Hemang Badani and will now take charge of a franchise still searching for its first IPL title.

The appointment also marks a return to a frontline cricket role for Ganguly after his spells as BCCI president, Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president and senior administrator.

Ganguly returns to Delhi Capitals in new role

Ganguly’s relationship with Delhi Capitals dates back to 2019, when he joined the franchise as an advisor.

He later took on wider responsibilities as Director of Cricket, working across the Capitals’ cricketing operations. His involvement extended beyond the IPL team to the franchise’s women’s side and its broader cricket structure.

The franchise said his familiarity with the organisation, players, support staff and management was an important factor in his appointment.

Delhi Capitals chairman and co-owner Parth Jindal welcomed Ganguly’s move into coaching, describing him as an integral part of the franchise’s journey.

Jindal said he was proud to announce Ganguly as head coach and expressed confidence that his leadership and experience would help prepare the team for the new season.

Co-owner Kiran Kumar Grandhi also highlighted Ganguly’s understanding of the franchise’s cricketing structure and said his experience would be valuable as the team moves into a new phase.

‘It’s time now for Delhi’

Delhi Capitals announced the appointment through a video featuring Ganguly, using his well-known “Dadagiri” persona to signal the beginning of a new chapter.

In the video, Ganguly said he had spent time watching from the sidelines and guiding the team but now wanted to be directly involved in the action.

“You think there comes a time when you’ve done enough, seen enough, achieved enough, when you can step back, watch from the sidelines, guide, believe, and for a while, that’s enough,” Ganguly said.

He then described Delhi as a team that had been waiting for its opportunity before declaring that “it’s time now for Delhi”.

The franchise shared the announcement with the tagline “Time for Dadagiri”, reflecting Ganguly’s reputation for an aggressive and expressive leadership style.

Ganguly’s first IPL head coaching assignment

Although Ganguly has previously worked closely with an IPL franchise, the Delhi Capitals appointment is his first role as an IPL head coach.

He had earlier been part of the Delhi setup during Ricky Ponting’s tenure as head coach. His subsequent work as Director of Cricket gave him extensive involvement in player recruitment, team building and franchise strategy.

Ganguly also recently took up his first formal head coaching assignment with Pretoria Capitals in the SA20, giving him experience in the role before his move into the IPL dugout.

His administrative background is equally extensive.

Ganguly served as president of the BCCI and previously headed the Cricket Association of Bengal. His career therefore spans playing, captaincy, administration, franchise management and now head coaching.

A career built on leadership

Ganguly is widely regarded as one of India’s most influential cricket captains.

As India’s captain, he led the team through a period in which the side developed a more aggressive approach to international cricket.

After retiring from international cricket, he remained involved in the sport through commentary, administration and franchise management.

His tenure as BCCI president added another layer to his experience, exposing him to the administrative and commercial sides of Indian cricket.

At Delhi Capitals, that combination of playing experience and administration will now be brought into the coaching environment.

Ganguly said his familiarity with the franchise made the new role particularly significant.

“Delhi Capitals is a franchise very close to my heart, and one that I have shared a strong relationship with over the years,” he said in the franchise statement.

He added that he had worked closely with the owners, management, support staff and players and was looking forward to building a “strong and fearless team”.

New coaching setup takes shape

Delhi Capitals are also putting together a new-look coaching structure for IPL 2027.

Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh, former Sri Lanka fast bowler Chaminda Vaas and former India leg-spinner Amit Mishra have been linked with coaching responsibilities in the new setup.

Reports have indicated that Yuvraj is expected to work as a batting coach, while Vaas is set to handle the fast-bowling department and Mishra the spin-bowling unit.

However, unlike Ganguly’s appointment, the franchise has not yet officially announced the complete coaching staff in its October 6 statement. Therefore, the roles of Yuvraj, Vaas and Mishra should be treated as reported plans rather than a fully confirmed coaching list.

The three former players bring substantial international and IPL experience.

Vaas is one of Sri Lanka’s most successful fast bowlers, while Mishra is among the leading wicket-takers in IPL history. Yuvraj brings experience from India’s limited-overs teams and has been involved in mentoring and coaching activities since his playing career.

Hemang Badani’s tenure comes to an end

Ganguly’s appointment follows the end of Hemang Badani’s tenure as Delhi Capitals head coach.

The franchise had also moved away from the previous coaching group as part of its preparations for the 2027 season.

Delhi Capitals finished sixth in IPL 2026, according to the franchise’s latest season record, after ending the 2025 campaign in fifth place.

The coaching change is therefore part of a broader restructuring ahead of the new IPL cycle.

The franchise is also entering a period in which operational responsibilities are shifting between its co-owners, JSW Sports and GMR Sports, under their agreed management arrangement.

What Ganguly faces at Delhi Capitals

Ganguly’s immediate task will be to shape the team for the 2027 season.

That includes working with the franchise management on squad planning, player development and preparations for the IPL auction.

The Capitals have several established Indian players around whom they can build their squad, including captain Axar Patel. The franchise will also need to assess its overseas combination and strengthen areas identified during the previous season.

Ganguly’s previous involvement with the franchise means he already knows much of its structure and personnel.

That familiarity could help reduce the transition period as he moves from a management role into the dugout.

At the same time, becoming head coach places him directly in charge of tactical preparation, player management and match-day decisions.

Delhi Capitals still chasing maiden IPL title

Delhi Capitals are among the original franchises of the IPL but have yet to win the tournament.

The team came close to the title in 2020, reaching the final before losing to Mumbai Indians.

Since then, the Capitals have continued to make changes to their playing and coaching structures in search of a breakthrough season.

Ganguly now takes charge with the franchise hoping that his experience as a captain, administrator and cricket strategist can help create a more consistent campaign.

For Ganguly, the appointment represents another transition in a career that has already taken him from international cricket to administration and franchise management.

His first IPL head coaching season will begin with the 2027 tournament, as Delhi Capitals start a new chapter under a familiar face.
