Mumbai: Former India captain and ex-selector Kris Srikkanth has claimed that Hardik Pandya could part ways with Mumbai Indians after the conclusion of the IPL 2026 season.
The remarks come amid growing speculation surrounding Hardik’s future with the franchise following another disappointing campaign for Mumbai Indians.
Hardik’s second stint under scrutiny
Hardik Pandya returned to Mumbai Indians ahead of the IPL 2024 season after leaving Gujarat Titans, where he had previously led the side to major success.
The all-rounder was expected to lead a new era for Mumbai Indians after replacing Rohit Sharma as captain, but results during his tenure have remained inconsistent.
Mumbai suffered early exits during the 2024 and 2026 IPL campaigns, with only a playoff appearance separating the disappointing seasons.
The team’s recent struggles have intensified discussions about possible changes within the franchise setup.
Social media activity sparks speculation
Speculation about Hardik’s future increased after reports on social media claimed that the Mumbai Indians captain unfollowed the franchise on Instagram following their defeat to Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
The development triggered widespread debate among fans regarding his relationship with the franchise management.
Although neither Hardik nor Mumbai Indians have issued any official statement on the matter, the incident added fuel to ongoing rumours about a possible exit.
Srikkanth hints at separation
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Kris Srikkanth suggested that Mumbai Indians may already have indicated to Hardik that his services may no longer be required.
“Looks like there’s no news, no official update from anyone. It feels like they’ve basically said, ‘You’re not needed anymore, you can leave,’” Srikkanth remarked.
He further questioned whether Hardik would enter the IPL auction next season or move through a trade to another franchise.
“Either they will release him, or they’ll just say, ‘Thanks bro, thanks for everything,’ and move on,” he added.
‘Best for both parties’
Kris Srikkanth also stated that a separation could ultimately benefit both the player and the franchise.
“The best thing for both parties is to say, ‘Boss, you go your way, I will go my way. We will meet somewhere down the line,’” he said.
The comments reflect increasing uncertainty around Mumbai Indians’ long-term leadership plans after a turbulent few seasons.
Injury concerns add to uncertainty
Hardik Pandya has also been dealing with fitness concerns during the ongoing IPL season.
The Mumbai Indians skipper missed the team’s last two matches due to back spasms.
Ahead of the clash against Punjab Kings, Hardik was reportedly seen practising alone in the nets but did not travel to Dharamsala with the squad.
Mumbai Indians officials remained cautious regarding his availability for the match, stating that a final decision would only be taken closer to the toss.
Mumbai Indians face crucial rebuilding phase
The situation has once again placed focus on the future direction of Mumbai Indians, one of the most successful teams in IPL history.
The franchise has undergone significant changes in recent seasons, including leadership transitions and squad restructuring.
Cricket analysts believe the coming months could prove crucial for both Hardik Pandya and Mumbai Indians as the franchise evaluates its plans ahead of the next IPL cycle.
Whether Hardik remains with Mumbai or seeks opportunities elsewhere is expected to remain one of the major talking points heading into the IPL 2027 season.
