Mumbai: Former India cricketer Kris Srikkanth has advised Hardik Pandya to consider stepping down as captain of Mumbai Indians, suggesting that handing over leadership to Suryakumar Yadav could help resolve the ongoing captaincy debate.

The discussion comes ahead of the Indian Premier League 2026 season, with Mumbai Indians still searching for their first title since 2020.

Leadership debate refuses to fade

Hardik returned to Mumbai Indians in 2024 in a high-profile move from Gujarat Titans, whom he led to a title in their debut season in 2022. He was immediately appointed captain, replacing Rohit Sharma, a decision that sparked widespread debate.

The franchise endured a disappointing 2024 campaign, finishing at the bottom of the table, which intensified scrutiny over the leadership change. Although the team improved to reach the playoffs in 2025, the continued title drought has kept the captaincy issue alive.

Srikkanth suggests leadership change

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Srikkanth described the situation as “strange”, pointing out that Mumbai Indians currently have multiple experienced leaders in the squad.

“They have to come together again—the franchise owners and team management with Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya—and set this right,” he said.

Srikkanth suggested that Suryakumar Yadav could be given a chance to lead the side, especially after his recent success on the international stage.

‘Hardik should step aside voluntarily’

The former BCCI selector went a step further, recommending that Hardik himself offer to relinquish captaincy to ease tensions within the squad.

“If Hardik himself says ‘let Surya lead and I’ll support’, things will get resolved,” Srikkanth said, adding that such a move could create clarity and unity within the team.

He emphasised that while Hardik is a capable leader, the presence of multiple senior figures—including Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav—makes the current arrangement complex.

Suryakumar’s growing leadership credentials

Suryakumar Yadav’s leadership credentials have strengthened significantly after leading India to the T20 World Cup title in 2026, making him a strong contender for the role.

Srikkanth noted that having two World Cup-winning captains in the squad adds to the unusual nature of the situation, with both Rohit and Suryakumar playing under Hardik.

Internal decision key for MI

Despite external suggestions, the final decision rests with the Mumbai Indians management, which must balance team dynamics, performance, and long-term strategy.

Srikkanth hinted that the current arrangement could be part of an internal policy, but stressed the need for clarity as the new season approaches.

Conclusion

As the IPL 2026 season nears, Mumbai Indians face a crucial decision regarding leadership. Whether Hardik Pandya continues as captain or the franchise opts for a change, resolving the issue swiftly could be key to their title ambitions.

Srikkanth’s comments highlight the importance of unity and clear direction in a team packed with talent and leadership experience.
