Former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming has been appointed as the new head coach of England’s men’s Test team, while Joe Root has made a surprise return as full-time Test captain after stepping down from the role in 2022.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced Fleming’s appointment on a four-year contract that runs until September 2030, ushering in a new chapter for England’s Test side following the end of Ben Stokes’ tenure as captain.

Fleming signs four-year deal

Fleming, 53, recently ended his long association with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), where he served as head coach for 18 years and guided the franchise to multiple Indian Premier League titles.

His appointment brings extensive coaching and leadership experience to the England setup. Besides his success in franchise cricket, Fleming is well acquainted with English cricket through his playing stints with Middlesex, Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire, whom he captained to the County Championship title in 2005.

He has also coached Southern Brave in The Hundred, giving him further familiarity with the English domestic circuit.

Although appointed immediately, Fleming will not oversee England’s upcoming three-Test series against Pakistan. Former England batter Marcus Trescothick will continue as interim head coach before Fleming officially takes charge ahead of England’s Test tour of South Africa in December.

Strong partnership with Brendon McCullum

Fleming is expected to work closely with Brendon McCullum, who continues as England’s white-ball coach after stepping down from the Test role.

The two former New Zealand teammates share a long-standing friendship and business relationship, something the ECB believes will help ensure continuity across England’s coaching structure.

Fleming said he aims to build on the foundations laid by McCullum and Stokes while preparing the team for sustained success.

Joe Root back as England Test captain

One of Fleming’s first major decisions has been the appointment of Joe Root as England’s full-time Test captain.

Root previously led England in 64 Test matches between 2017 and 2022, making him the country’s longest-serving Test captain before stepping down to focus on his batting.

His return follows Ben Stokes’ retirement from international cricket after the recent New Zealand series.

Initially viewed as a short-term option while England evaluated future leadership candidates, Root has now been entrusted with leading the Test side on a full-time basis.

Fleming outlines long-term vision

Speaking after his appointment, Fleming described the England Test coaching role as one of cricket’s most prestigious positions.

He said his immediate ambition is to help England win matches while also developing the next generation of Test cricketers.

Fleming also expressed excitement about working with Root again, describing him as a “generational talent” capable of achieving even greater success in a different leadership environment.

He added that nurturing the development of players such as Harry Brook would be central to England’s long-term plans.

Reflecting on his own career, Fleming said English cricket had played an important role in rekindling his passion for the game during his successful spell with Nottinghamshire, making the opportunity to coach England particularly meaningful.

Root embraces second stint

Reacting to his reappointment, Root said returning as England’s Test captain was a tremendous honour.

He acknowledged that the role carries immense responsibility but said his recent experience leading the side again had renewed his enthusiasm for captaincy.

Root also welcomed the opportunity to work alongside Fleming, praising the former New Zealand captain’s leadership qualities and cricketing knowledge.

He said he looks forward to helping build a winning culture while guiding England’s next generation of Test players under Fleming’s leadership.
