India captain Suryakumar Yadav displayed sharp tactical awareness during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 final, making a key bowling move that led to the early dismissal of New Zealand’s in-form batter Finn Allen at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
Allen had been one of New Zealand’s most dangerous batters heading into the final, scoring 289 runs in seven matches, including a brilliant century against South Africa in the semi-final.
Captain’s tactical move pays off
Recognising Allen’s discomfort against spin bowling, Suryakumar introduced Axar Patel as early as the third over of New Zealand’s innings.
The strategy paid off immediately.
On the fourth ball of the over, Allen attempted an aggressive slog pull against Axar’s quicker delivery but mistimed the shot. The ball travelled straight to Tilak Varma at long-on, who completed a safe catch.
The early breakthrough halted New Zealand’s momentum and gave India a crucial advantage during the powerplay.
Fans praise Suryakumar’s leadership
The dismissal quickly went viral on social media, with many fans praising Suryakumar Yadav for his smart captaincy and tactical awareness.
Cricket enthusiasts highlighted how the decision to attack Allen with spin early in the innings showed the Indian captain’s understanding of the batter’s weakness.
India dominate the final
India produced a commanding all-round performance in the final to secure a historic victory.
Batting first, the hosts piled up 255 for 5, the highest total ever recorded in a T20 World Cup final.
Sanju Samson led the charge with a blistering 89 off 46 balls, which included five fours and eight sixes. He was well supported by Abhishek Sharma (52 off 21) and Ishan Kishan (54 off 25).
Samson and Abhishek shared a rapid 98-run opening partnership, setting the tone for India’s massive total.
Although James Neesham briefly slowed India’s scoring by taking three wickets in an over, Shivam Dube finished strongly with an unbeaten 26 off eight balls, pushing India past the 250 mark.
Bowlers seal historic win
India’s bowlers then delivered a disciplined performance to defend the huge total.
Jasprit Bumrah starred with an exceptional spell of 4 for 15, while Axar Patel picked up three wickets to dismantle New Zealand’s batting line-up.
Despite a fighting 52 from Tim Seifert, New Zealand were bowled out for 159 in 19 overs, handing India a 96-run victory.
The triumph made India the first team to successfully defend the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title and also secured their third championship, marking another historic milestone in Indian cricket.
