New Delhi: The 10th edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka, will kick off on February 7, 2026, marking the start of a month-long cricketing spectacle. Six teams, including defending champions India, will feature on the opening day as the tournament unfolds across major venues in both countries. With 20 teams competing, this edition retains the same structure as the previous World Cup, promising 55 matches of high-intensity action leading up to the final on March 8.
Tournament format remains unchanged
As in the last cycle, the 2026 T20 World Cup will follow a format that features 20 teams divided into four groups of five. Each team will play in a round-robin format within its group, resulting in 40 group-stage matches from February 7 to 20. The top two sides from each group will progress to the Super Eight stage, beginning February 21.
In the Super Eights, teams will be placed into two groups of four based on pre-tournament seedings. If a non–pre-seeded team advances from the group stage, it will inherit the position originally assigned to the eliminated seeded team. The top four teams from the Super Eights will qualify for the semi-finals.
Group A: India set to open against USA
Group A comprises India (ranked 1), Pakistan (7), the United States of America (33), Namibia (15) and the Netherlands (13).
India will begin its campaign on February 7 in Mumbai against the USA. This will be followed by fixtures against Namibia on February 12 and arch-rivals Pakistan on February 15 in Colombo. India’s final Group A match is scheduled against the Netherlands on February 18 in Ahmedabad.
Group B: Australia face tough competition
Group B features 2021 champions Australia (ranked 2), Sri Lanka (8), Zimbabwe (12), Ireland (11) and Oman (20).
The group promises high-quality matchups, particularly between Australia and Sri Lanka, both of whom have strong T20 credentials.
Group C: England and West Indies lead the pack
Group C includes two-time champions England (3), the West Indies (6), Bangladesh (9), Nepal (17) and first-time entrants Italy (28).
With England and West Indies placed together, this group is expected to witness competitive fixtures, along with Bangladesh’s challenge and Nepal’s rising presence on the T20 stage.
Group D: Balanced competition awaits
Group D comprises New Zealand (4), South Africa (5), Afghanistan (10), Canada (19) and the UAE (16).
The group is considered one of the most balanced, with New Zealand, South Africa and Afghanistan entering as strong contenders.
Super Eight stage
Beginning February 21, the Super Eight stage will split the eight qualifying teams into two groups. Seedings will determine placement but may shift based on early upsets.
If India qualify, they will play their Super Eight matches in Ahmedabad, Chennai and Kolkata.
Knockout rounds and final
The semi-finals will be held on March 4 and 5, with the first scheduled in Kolkata or Colombo, depending on whether Sri Lanka or Pakistan reach the last four. Mumbai will host the second semi-final.
The final is slated for March 8 in Ahmedabad, but if Pakistan reach the final, the match will be shifted to Colombo as per ICC’s venue contingency planning.
