New Delhi: Batting legend Sachin Tendulkar has welcomed the ICC’s newly introduced post-pregnancy return-to-play guidelines, calling them a “massive boost” for the future of women’s cricket.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Monday unveiled a structured framework aimed at supporting women cricketers in safely returning to the game after childbirth. The guidelines outline a comprehensive 16-week recovery and training pathway designed to ensure both physical and psychological well-being.
“Massive boost” for women’s cricket
Tendulkar praised the initiative, highlighting its importance in empowering female athletes to balance both career and motherhood.
He stated that true empowerment in sport lies in supporting players through every phase of their journey. The shift from athletes having to choose between family and career to being able to manage both reflects positive progress in the sport.
According to Tendulkar, such structured support systems are crucial for the long-term growth and inclusivity of women’s cricket worldwide.
Six-stage return-to-play framework
The ICC guidelines are based on a six ‘R’s framework: Ready, Review, Restore, Recondition, Return and Refine. These stages aim to provide a gradual and safe transition back to competitive cricket.
The process begins with an early medical and psychological review, ensuring that players receive proper support while adjusting to motherhood. This is followed by a phased reintroduction to strength and conditioning training.
After approximately eight weeks, players can resume running activities under medical supervision, ensuring that recovery is progressing as expected.
Dedicated medical support system
A key feature of the guidelines is the appointment of a dedicated Case Manager for each player. This individual, who can be either a doctor or a physiotherapist, will oversee the player’s recovery journey.
The framework also emphasises continuous monitoring of physical conditions, including musculoskeletal health and pelvic floor recovery, before granting clearance for full return to competition.
Focus on holistic well-being
The ICC stated that the guidelines are aligned with local laws and aim to provide practical, physical, and psychological support to players.
By addressing both mental and physical aspects of recovery, the initiative ensures a more holistic approach to athlete welfare.
A progressive step forward
The introduction of these guidelines marks a significant step towards inclusivity in cricket. It acknowledges the unique challenges faced by women athletes and provides them with the necessary tools to continue their careers without compromise.
With support from legends like Sachin Tendulkar, the initiative is expected to play a key role in shaping a more balanced and supportive future for women’s cricket.
