England: Head coach Thomas Tuchel has named his 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with several high-profile omissions immediately sparking debate among football supporters and analysts. Among the most notable exclusions are Phil Foden, Cole Palmer and Trent Alexander-Arnold, all of whom have been left out of England’s plans for the tournament in North America.

England are scheduled to begin their World Cup campaign against Croatia on June 17 in Dallas before facing Ghana on June 23 and Panama on June 27 in Group L.

Major names miss out on squad selection

Tuchel’s first major tournament squad since taking charge has generated discussion because of several unexpected decisions.

Apart from Foden, Palmer and Alexander-Arnold, experienced players including Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Morgan Gibbs-White were also omitted from the final squad.

Reports suggested that Tuchel prioritised squad chemistry, tactical flexibility and recent performances over reputation and past contributions.

The omission of Maguire drew attention after the defender publicly expressed disappointment over missing selection.

Ivan Toney among surprise inclusions

One of the notable additions to the squad is Ivan Toney, who returns after impressive scoring form with Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia. Despite limited appearances under Tuchel, his performances at club level reportedly earned him a place in the World Cup squad.

Ollie Watkins also secured a return after strong performances for Aston Villa and is expected to provide competition in attack behind captain Harry Kane.

Tuchel has also retained a youthful midfield group featuring Declan Rice, Kobbie Mainoo, Morgan Rogers and Jude Bellingham.

Injury concerns remain for selected players

Some players included in the squad also arrive with fitness concerns ahead of the tournament.

Tino Livramento was selected despite reportedly missing recent action because of a thigh problem, while Djed Spence also secured a place amid injury concerns.

Officials will continue monitoring player fitness during preparations leading up to the World Cup.
