Fourteen-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi once again grabbed headlines during the third Under-19 ODI between India and South Africa, delivering a sensational performance that underlined why he is being seen as one of Indian cricket’s brightest young talents.
The match began with an unexpected moment. After India lost the toss, Sooryavanshi was caught on camera covering his face with his hands, visibly disappointed. The honest reaction drew smiles from viewers and even the match referee, highlighting the teenager’s raw emotions on the big stage.
Young captain leads from the front
What followed later was a masterclass in batting. Leading the side in the absence of regular captain Ayush Mhatre, Sooryavanshi completely dominated the South African attack. Batting with confidence and fearless intent, he reached his century in just 63 balls.
At 14 years and nine months, Sooryavanshi became the youngest captain to score a hundred in Youth ODIs. He eventually finished with a stunning 127 off just 74 balls, filled with clean hitting and fluent stroke play.
India posted a massive total of 393 for 7 in their allotted 50 overs, making South Africa’s decision to bowl first prove extremely costly.
Strong support and big partnership
Sooryavanshi received excellent support from Aaron George, who played a composed knock of 118 from 106 deliveries. Together, the duo stitched a huge opening partnership of 227 runs, effectively taking the match away from the visitors within the first half of the innings.
The South African bowlers struggled to contain the run flow as boundaries flowed freely, with the Indian batters showing complete control.
Bowlers seal a crushing win
South Africa’s reply never gained momentum. Kishan Singh struck early, reducing them to 15 for 3 within the first four overs. He dismissed Jorich Van Schalkwyk, Adnaan Lagadien and Lethabo Phahlamohlaka in quick succession.
Although Daniel Bosman and Jason Rowles attempted to rebuild the innings, wickets kept falling at regular intervals. South Africa were eventually bowled out for 160 in 35 overs.
India registered a massive 233-run victory, completing a clean sweep of the three-match series and underlining their dominance in the contest.
For Sooryavanshi, it was a day that began with visible frustration but ended in history-making brilliance — a reminder that even at 14, pressure only seems to bring out the best in him.
