Madrid: Spanish football giants Real Madrid have been hit by fresh controversy ahead of the crucial El Clasico clash after midfielder Federico Valverde reportedly suffered a traumatic brain injury following an altercation with teammate Aurélien Tchouaméni during training.
According to multiple reports from Spain, tensions between the two players escalated during a training session at Real Madrid’s Valdebebas training complex earlier this week. The incident comes at a difficult time for the club, with the team struggling through a disappointing season that could end without silverware once again.
Reports suggested that the disagreement began during training on Wednesday and continued into Thursday. The situation allegedly worsened after a physical challenge during practice, leading to a heated confrontation inside the dressing room.
As reported by The Athletic, Valverde allegedly fell during the argument and struck his head on a table inside the changing room area. He was later taken to hospital for medical evaluation and observation.
Real Madrid confirm injury setback
Real Madrid later issued an official statement confirming that Valverde had sustained a traumatic brain injury and would be sidelined for the next 10 to 14 days under medical supervision.
“Following tests carried out today on our player, Fede Valverde, by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a traumatic brain injury,” the club said in its statement.
The Spanish club added that the midfielder is currently recovering at home and remains in stable condition. However, the injury means Valverde will miss Sunday’s highly anticipated El Clasico against arch-rivals FC Barcelona.
The absence of one of Madrid’s most influential midfielders is considered a major setback as the team attempts to keep its fading La Liga title hopes alive.
Club launches disciplinary proceedings
Real Madrid also confirmed that disciplinary proceedings had been initiated against both players following the incident.
The club stated that internal investigations would determine the appropriate action against Valverde and Tchouameni once all procedures are completed.
“Real Madrid C.F. announces that, following the events that occurred this morning during first-team training, it has decided to open disciplinary proceedings against our players Federico Valverde and Aurélien Tchouameni,” the statement read.
The club has not yet disclosed the nature of the possible punishments or sanctions.
Valverde denies physical fight
Amid growing speculation on social media and in Spanish media reports, Valverde later addressed the controversy through a lengthy post on Instagram.
The Uruguayan midfielder admitted that an argument had taken place but strongly denied reports claiming the players physically attacked each other.
According to Valverde, emotions and frustration over the club’s disappointing season contributed to tensions inside the dressing room. He clarified that his injury occurred accidentally when he hit a table during the heated exchange.
“At no point did my teammate hit me, and I didn’t hit him either,” Valverde stated.
He further apologised for the incident and expressed disappointment over the negative attention surrounding the club at a critical stage of the season.
Valverde also admitted that Madrid’s struggles this season had emotionally affected several players within the squad.
Difficult season for Los Blancos
The controversy has added further pressure on Real Madrid ahead of Sunday’s blockbuster encounter against Barcelona at the Nou Camp.
The Spanish giants are currently trailing Barcelona in the La Liga standings and face the possibility of finishing the campaign without a major trophy.
Madrid’s season has already been marred by several setbacks. The club was eliminated from the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals by Bayern Munich earlier this season.
They also suffered defeat against Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final, while lower-division side Albacete knocked them out of the Copa del Rey in a shocking upset.
The upcoming El Clasico is now being viewed as Madrid’s final opportunity to salvage pride in an otherwise disappointing campaign.
A defeat against Barcelona would officially hand the La Liga title to the Catalan club, further intensifying scrutiny on the players, coaching staff, and management.
Pressure mounts before El Clasico
The reported dressing room tensions have sparked widespread debate among football fans and analysts regarding the pressure within elite football environments.
With the season nearing its conclusion, Real Madrid now faces the challenge of managing both internal discipline issues and crucial on-field expectations.
The club will hope the controversy does not further disrupt preparations for one of football’s biggest rivalries as they prepare to take on Barcelona in a potentially title-deciding clash.
