Dambulla: Fresh video evidence has shed light on what led to young Indian cricketer Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s heated outburst during India A’s ill-tempered clash against Sri Lanka A in the tri-nation series.

The 15-year-old, who is set to join India’s senior squad for the upcoming Ireland T20 tour, found himself at the centre of controversy after a dramatic Super Over defeat in Dambulla.

What the video reveals

The footage shows that as Sooryavanshi and Suryansh Shedge were walking back after failing to chase 17 runs in the Super Over, a couple of Sri Lanka A players appeared to direct comments toward them.

Two players, identified by jersey numbers 76 and 5, were seen gesturing and saying something in the direction of the Indian duo during the celebrations.

Moments later, Sooryavanshi reacted angrily and charged towards Sri Lanka pacer Kugathas Mathulan, who had successfully defended the target in the Super Over.

Heated confrontation on field

As tensions escalated, Sri Lanka A player Vishen Halambage stepped in, but Sooryavanshi was seen pushing a fielder during the altercation.

The situation threatened to spiral further before senior Sri Lankan cricketer Niroshan Dickwella intervened and separated the players, preventing a full-blown physical clash.

Even as he walked off the field, Sooryavanshi looked visibly upset, repeatedly glancing back at the Sri Lankan players.

Pressure-filled finish

India A had a target of 17 in the Super Over but managed only nine runs. Sooryavanshi, who faced the last three deliveries, scored six runs including a boundary but couldn’t take his team home.

The defeat marked India A’s second loss in the tournament.

Build-up to the flashpoint

The altercation came after a match already filled with drama. There had been prolonged confusion over whether a Super Over should even be played due to fading light.

India A captain Tilak Varma was involved in a lengthy and animated discussion with the umpires, who eventually decided to proceed with the tie-breaker after a delay of nearly 10 minutes.

During those discussions, Sooryavanshi had also briefly approached the officials before being pulled back by head coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar.

What next?

With match referee Pradeep Jeyapragash yet to announce any decision, it remains to be seen whether disciplinary action will be taken or if the incident will be settled with a warning.

Bigger picture

Despite the controversy, Sooryavanshi remains one of India’s brightest young prospects and is on the verge of a major milestone—joining the senior national team for the Ireland T20 series.

However, the Dambulla incident serves as a reminder of the pressures young athletes face and the importance of maintaining composure in high-stakes situations.
