Former India captain Virat Kohli praised the national team after their commanding victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 final, congratulating the players for their fearless approach and resilience throughout the tournament.

India defeated New Zealand by 96 runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium, successfully defending their T20 World Cup crown and becoming the first team in history to retain the title.

Kohli congratulates Team India

Soon after the victory, Kohli took to social media to applaud the team’s performance and spirit during the tournament.

“Champions. Phenomenal win for Team India in Ahmedabad. Absolutely no match for the explosive cricket played by us throughout the tournament. Brilliant character shown by the boys to keep fighting in tough situations and become world champions once again,” Kohli wrote.

He also congratulated the players and support staff for their collective effort.

“Congratulations to all the players and all the members of the management for achieving this feat. Jai Hind,” he added.

India posts record total in final

India delivered a spectacular batting display after being invited to bat first. The defending champions piled up 255 for five, the highest total ever recorded in a T20 World Cup final.

Sanju Samson led the charge with a blistering 89, while Abhishek Sharma contributed 52 and Ishan Kishan struck a quick 54, as India’s top order dominated the New Zealand bowling attack.

Samson and Abhishek set the tone early with a stunning 98-run opening partnership in just 7.1 overs, putting the Kiwi bowlers under immense pressure.

India crossed the 200-run mark in only 15 overs, maintaining a relentless scoring rate.

Late flourish boosts India’s total

New Zealand briefly found hope when James Neesham dismissed Samson, Kishan and captain Suryakumar Yadav in the same over.

However, Shivam Dube ensured a strong finish with an unbeaten 26, smashing 24 runs in the final over to push India to the massive total.

Bowlers seal dominant victory

Chasing a daunting 256-run target, New Zealand struggled to cope with the scoreboard pressure. Early dismissals of Finn Allen and Glenn Phillips dented their chase.

India’s bowling attack then took control of the match. Jasprit Bumrah delivered a sensational spell, taking 4 for 15, while Axar Patel claimed three wickets.

Although Tim Seifert fought back with a brisk 52 off 26 balls, New Zealand were eventually bowled out for 159 in 19 overs.

The comprehensive victory sealed India’s historic achievement as they became the first team to successfully defend the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title.
