Bengaluru: Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru will kick off their Indian Premier League 2026 campaign against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday, with a renewed approach and focus on the present.

Head coach Andy Flower made it clear that last season’s triumph will not influence the team’s mindset going into the new edition.

Fresh season, fresh mindset

Despite entering the tournament as defending champions, Flower stressed that the team is treating IPL 2026 as a completely new challenge.

“Of course we are the holders from last year, but this is a brand new year. We are a different group now, and the competition has evolved,” he said ahead of the opener.

The coach highlighted that both teams and players have developed over the past year, making it essential to adapt rather than rely on past success.

Kohli at ‘peak of his powers’

The biggest positive for RCB ahead of the new season is the form of Virat Kohli. Flower revealed that the senior batter looks in outstanding condition, both mentally and physically.

“Virat is in a really good space mentally. He’s very comfortable with himself but still incredibly hungry. Watching him in training, he looks at the peak of his powers,” Flower said.

Kohli’s performance will be crucial, especially at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, which is known for its high-scoring matches and batting-friendly conditions.

Lessons from last season

RCB’s title-winning campaign in 2025 did not begin smoothly, particularly at home. The team had lost its first three matches at the Chinnaswamy before turning things around.

Flower said those early setbacks have played a key role in shaping their preparations this year.

“At your home venue, you should understand the nuances better than the opposition. We’ve prepared keeping those lessons in mind,” he added.

Strong leadership core

The team will once again rely on captain Rajat Patidar, who led RCB to their maiden IPL title in his debut season as skipper.

Flower praised Patidar’s calm approach and influence within the dressing room, noting that his composure benefits the bowling unit in particular.

Vice-captain Jitesh Sharma continues to be an important figure, contributing with both tactical awareness and on-field energy.

Bowling boost with Hazlewood

RCB’s bowling attack has received a timely boost with the return of Josh Hazlewood. The fast bowler has rejoined the squad but is unlikely to feature in the opening match due to his recent arrival.

The team management remains optimistic about his fitness and expects him to play a significant role as the tournament progresses.

Conclusion

As Royal Challengers Bengaluru begin their title defence, the focus is firmly on adaptability and consistency. With Virat Kohli in top form and a balanced squad in place, RCB will look to build momentum early and avoid the slow start that marked their previous campaign.
