Bengaluru: Virat Kohli has opened up about his memorable stint as India’s Test captain, describing it as a “golden era” built on shared responsibility, unity and a fearless approach to the longest format of the game.
Speaking in a teaser for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) podcast, the former India skipper reflected on the factors that made his leadership period so successful, highlighting the unique team culture that defined that era.
A young core that grew together
Kohli emphasised that one of the defining features of his team was the minimal age gap among core players such as Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami and Ravindra Jadeja.
According to him, most of these players were in their 20s when they came together, creating a strong sense of camaraderie and collective ambition.
“The most important thing was our average age. There was no hesitation between seniors and juniors. We were like a group of friends,” Kohli said.
This closeness, he explained, allowed players to freely communicate and contribute, creating a dressing room environment where everyone felt valued.
Shared responsibility drove success
Kohli highlighted that leadership during his tenure was not limited to the captain or coaching staff alone. Instead, every player took ownership of the team’s direction and performance.
“It was not like a few people would take care of everything. Everyone felt they had a role in building the team for the next six to eight years,” he noted.
This culture of accountability encouraged players to constantly assess their own performances and look for ways to improve, which ultimately translated into consistent results on the field.
A historic captaincy tenure
Kohli’s time as Test captain began in 2014 during India’s tour of Australia, when he took over from MS Dhoni. Over the years, he went on to become India’s most successful Test captain.
In 68 matches as captain, Kohli led India to 40 victories — the highest by any Indian skipper in the format. His aggressive approach and emphasis on fitness brought a transformation in the team’s mindset.
He retired from Test cricket in 2025 after a prolonged dip in form, finishing with 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries. He remains India’s fourth-highest run-scorer in Test cricket.
Overseas dominance and pace revolution
One of the biggest achievements under Kohli’s leadership was India’s improved performance overseas. The team registered a historic Test series win in Australia in 2018-19, marking a significant milestone in Indian cricket history.
Kohli also led India to seven Test wins in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia), the most by an Asian captain.
A key factor behind this success was the development of a strong pace attack, featuring bowlers like Mohammed Shami and Ishant Sharma, who consistently delivered in challenging conditions abroad.
Balance at home and abroad
While India became a formidable force overseas, they continued their dominance at home as well. The spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja played a crucial role in maintaining India’s unbeaten record in home Test series during that period.
Kohli credited the team’s balance and adaptability for their success across different conditions.
Transition and legacy
Kohli stepped down as Test captain in 2022 following the tour of South Africa. He was succeeded by Rohit Sharma, who continued to build on the foundation laid during Kohli’s tenure.
In the years that followed, leadership transitioned further, with younger players like Shubman Gill taking on greater responsibility after the retirements of senior players.
Conclusion
Virat Kohli’s reflections offer a glimpse into what made his captaincy era special — a combination of youth, unity and a shared vision. Beyond records and statistics, it was the team’s collective mindset that defined India’s golden phase in Test cricket.
As Indian cricket continues to evolve, Kohli’s legacy as a leader remains a benchmark for future generations aiming to replicate that success.
