Despite being the leading run-scorer in the 2022 IPL with 741 runs, Kohli has struggled to make a significant impact in the World Cup. His scores in the group stage matches were disappointing, with innings of 1, 4, and 0.

Cricket legend Brian Lara has stepped in to defend Kohli amidst the criticism. Lara argues that the time Kohli spent at the crease against Afghanistan, even without a big score, will boost his confidence moving forward.

“Scoring 24 off 24 might not seem impressive, but the crucial thing is he spent time at the crease. This is a step closer for India to clinching the trophy. I believe Kohli will only get better as he moves to the Caribbean. He’s heading to Antigua next, and you’ll see him dig in and score runs,” Lara shared on Star Sports.

The Indian team management’s decision to stick with Kohli as Rohit Sharma’s opening partner has faced considerable backlash, with many questioning his batting position. Despite this, Lara has a different perspective, emphasizing the importance of patience with a player of Kohli’s caliber, known for his performance in crucial matches.

“When he gets into his rhythm, it’s a completely different game. We need to be patient with him; there are still many matches left in this World Cup,” Lara added.
