New York: The FIFA World Cup trophy has witnessed a sharp rise in its intrinsic value, with the gold content now estimated at approximately USD 7,13,000 (around Rs 6.73 crore), more than doubling since the last tournament in 2022, according to data from financial markets provider LSEG.
Surge driven by rising gold prices
The iconic trophy, one of the most recognisable symbols in global sport, is crafted from 6.175 kg of 18-carat gold, which includes approximately 4.93 kg of pure gold. Its value has surged in line with a broader rally in gold prices over recent years.
Market experts attribute the rise to a combination of geopolitical tensions, trade uncertainties, and slowing global economic growth, all of which have traditionally driven investors towards safe-haven assets such as gold.
Debajit Saha, lead analyst at LSEG Metals Research, noted that while gold prices have seen some correction from recent highs, the long-term upward trend remains significant. He added that the World Cup trophy’s increasing value reflects the sustained strength of the precious metal in global markets.
Sharp increase over decades
The trophy’s current valuation marks a dramatic increase when compared to previous tournaments. When Argentina lifted the trophy in Qatar in 2022, its gold content was valued at around USD 2,77,000 (approximately Rs 2.6 crore at the time).
Going further back, when the present design of the FIFA World Cup trophy was introduced ahead of the 1974 tournament, its estimated gold value stood at roughly USD 25,000. This highlights the exponential growth in gold prices over the past five decades.
Despite the rising monetary value, experts emphasise that the trophy remains priceless in sporting terms, symbolising the pinnacle of achievement in football.
Unique among global sporting trophies
The FIFA World Cup trophy stands apart from other major sporting awards due to its composition. It is the only major international sports trophy made primarily of gold, giving it an unmatched melt value.
In contrast, other prestigious trophies are made from less valuable metals. The UEFA Champions League and Europa League trophies, for instance, are crafted from sterling silver, with estimated melt values of around USD 16,950 and USD 22,600, respectively.
Among American sporting prizes, the Borg-Warner Trophy, awarded to the winner of the Indianapolis 500, is the heaviest and among the most valuable. Standing at 1.62 metres and made from approximately 69 kg of sterling silver, it carries a melt value of about USD 1,56,000.
Similarly, the Woodlawn Vase, presented at the Preakness Stakes, has an estimated melt value of around USD 24,860. The Vince Lombardi Trophy, awarded to Super Bowl champions and produced by Tiffany & Co., contains 3.2 kg of sterling silver, giving it a melt value of approximately USD 7,230.
World Cup expands amid growing global interest
The valuation update comes during the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026, which began on June 11 in the United States. The tournament has introduced an expanded format featuring 48 teams, up from 32 in previous editions.
The expansion reflects football’s growing global footprint and the increasing commercial and cultural significance of the World Cup. Alongside rising viewership and participation, the symbolic and financial value of its most coveted prize has also climbed steadily.
Conclusion
While the financial worth of the FIFA World Cup trophy has more than doubled in recent years, its true value continues to lie beyond monetary measurement. For players and nations, lifting the trophy represents the ultimate achievement in football.
However, the sharp rise in its gold content value offers a compelling perspective on broader economic trends, underlining how global factors influence even the most iconic symbols in sport.
