DC Defends Decision on Municipal Commissioner Amid Protests
Hospet :District Collector M.S. Diwakar has defended his decision not to immediately suspend the municipal commissioner following the tragic death of a young boy in the city. Amid intense protests and calls for the commissioner’s removal, Diwakar stated that he will await the outcome of a thorough investigation before taking further action.
The DC, who also serves as the municipal administrator, visited the Municipal Council premises late Sunday after a day-long dharna by council members. While he listened to their grievances, he maintained that suspending the commissioner without a full investigation would be premature. Diwakar has ordered an inquiry by the district planning cell and promised to act based on its findings.
In a press conference, Diwakar stressed the need for officials to address public grievances effectively. He expressed concern over the allegations against the municipal commissioner and indicated that such conduct would not be tolerated. However, he emphasized that the primary focus remains on investigating the circumstances surrounding the boy’s death.
The DC also addressed concerns regarding compensation for the boy’s family. Although immediate financial assistance was not possible, Diwakar assured that efforts would be made to provide appropriate support.
The protest, which started earlier in the day, grew as local residents and the boy’s parents joined the sit-in. Demonstrators voiced their frustration over the District Collector’s initial absence and demanded justice. Madiga community leaders, including C.R. Bharat Kumar and Veeraswamy, participated in the protest, urging a thorough investigation and criticising allegations against the commissioner based on caste. They emphasised that accountability should be based on actions, not community affiliation.
Despite heavy rain, protesters remained steadfast, vowing to continue their demonstration until their demands were addressed. The boy’s tragic death has intensified public outrage and calls for greater accountability within the local administration.
