Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka has introduced its first AI-powered traffic enforcement system in a major attempt to improve road discipline and reduce congestion in the densely populated city.
Known globally for severe traffic jams and chaotic roads, Dhaka has long struggled with manual traffic management despite multiple modernisation efforts.
AI system now detecting violations automatically
The new system, launched in April, connects traffic cameras across the city to artificial intelligence software capable of detecting traffic violations automatically.
The technology identifies offences such as signal jumping, lane violations and illegal parking. Vehicle owners receive instant notifications and fines through mobile messages.
Motorist Hannan Rahman Jibon said he became more cautious after receiving a fine for crossing a red signal.
“I am more careful now, with cameras installed in many different parts,” he said.
Traffic police officers say the system has reduced arguments and confrontations that frequently occurred during manual enforcement.
Dhaka among world’s slowest cities
Dhaka, home to over 22 million people, has often been ranked among the world’s most congested cities. Studies have shown that average traffic speeds in some areas are slower than walking pace.
Officials say the AI system is already showing positive results, with at least 300 vehicles penalised since implementation.
Inside the traffic control room, officers monitor live camera feeds while human analysts verify AI-detected violations before issuing fines.
Challenges still remain
Authorities admit the system still faces difficulties, including unclear number plates and incomplete camera coverage across the city.
Officials are also considering how to regulate Dhaka’s massive fleet of pedal rickshaws, which remain a major part of the city’s traffic system.
Experts believe the technology’s long-term success will depend on consistent enforcement and proper urban planning rather than technology alone.#Dhaka #ArtificialIntelligence #TrafficManagement #SmartCity #Bangladesh #newskarnataka
